Bottom paint

I have bottom painted my achilles and kept it in the water for the past 19 years. The bottom paint works well. It seems like a really large boat to hang off davits. Also the motor is too large to remove and install each time you want to use it. I'd look for about a 10 foot dinghy with a 5 to 7.5 HP motor. My boat planes with a 4HP with only one person in it. With two people it won't plane. The achilles is a 10' 2" with wood floors and inflatable keel.

OK here goes....I sail a 25 ft Mirage (Canadian Made) sailboat, I tow a 330 quicksilver inflatable (11.3) ......and row it with oars ! LOL. I guess it all depends on what you want to do with your dinghy thinghy LOL

Davit issues

Before I get to that, there is a C30 in the marina where I used to keep my boat that had a PWC on davits. My guess is the PWC weighs more than your proposed dinghy. However,...

To answer your question, putting that much weight on davits which hangs out over the stern of a 30ft boat will cause the stern to be weighed down with the resultant effect of slower sailing. With the stern down it causes a lot of drag.

Another issue is what happens when the mother boat is sailing at a heel angle - will the davits hold the dinghy on centerline or will it shift? What happens with that weight in a rough sea? Will the pushpit railing be used as a structural part of the davit system? If so, check out the size of pushpit mounting bolts - 1/4inch?

Still is another issue - gas. Where will you store all that gas? A 25hp uses a lot more fuel than, say, a 3hp.

I'll stay away from the other question of why a person really needs that much hp. To each his own.

Sounds like a lot of dink

Thats a lot of dink, even for a larger boat. Most use a dink to put around an anchorage, go to the beach, store or whatever. That large of a dink would be nice if you had to go longer distances, and didn't have to load and unload it. I think that if you go out on any kind of extended cruise, you will find it to be a major hinderance. Just getting that 25 on and off would be a real PITA. Don't think I would want that much weight hung on the rear of a 30 footer either. Would certainly effect the performance of the boat. I have an 8 footer with a 2hp. and it does what is is supposed to do, easy to put up on deck, and the engine is light enough to not be any problem to take on and off.

Thats a great dinghy but it's just too big for your boat.

I have a 10'3" Caribe with a 15 HP Evenrude and a center console; and I carry it in davits on my 37' Center Cockpit. I needed the weight because my Perkins 4-108 was replaced with a Light Yanmar 3HM35F and the loss of weight affected my tracking. Never-the-less I got heavy duty custom davits by Holstrand with two 1500# electric davit winches to lift it easily. Unfortunately at 10'3" it is 1'3" less than my beam I have still accidently bumped it on Piles maneuvering around docks. The other problem I have had with it is the weight. I have grounded it on sand beaches to go ashore as the tide went away, leaving me with one heck of a job to get it back in the water. Adding wheels did little as they too sunk in under the weight.

I advise you to get a light, easily rowable dinghy, with a reasonably sized outboard.

The best time to go looking for a dingy is at night?

In all seriousness, check around your area. If you have seen a dingy sitting in someone's back yard knock on the door and offer them a few hundred bucks for it. You would be surprised what you can find and what you can get when you flash the cash. I got a descent 8' hard dingy a few years ago like that. It has worked well for my needs.

I have been watching craigslist, and it is flooded with dinghy's in my my area. I mean absoluetly full of dinghys. cheap.... The same ones stay on craigslist for weeks. the prices just keep going down, down, down. I bought the 10' Achilles RIB and a basically brand new 8hp nissan for under $500. the rib needs a little work, but im almost finished reskinning it. the motor is beautiful! keep looking on Craigslist and haggle. check out my area of Charleston if you want, i will go look at them for you!

Bob S: it is busier than normal. The dinghy wheels, fishing poles, and the bucket are usually not there, but most of the other stuff is. The cover on the dinghy is referred to as "dinghy chaps" and is primarily a sun cover over the inflated tubes only. Those pictures were taken in Mexico where we spent 6 years cruising the Sea of Cortez.

What handicap allowance do you get with all that stuff???

Hermit: While I might agree with the comments about why one needs all that horsepower, there is, or was, it's been a while, a racing sled in Seattle called "Caruba" (sp?) that had a "dink" called "Rum Runner" with twin 200hp (yup, thats TWIN) outboards (do the math - 400hp!). So, while some of us might question all that horsepower there is at least one other sailboat skipper that has more. A LOT more!

There are a lot of scammers on Craig's List so look out!

The picture is of my Avon 3.15 roll-up which I stow on the coach roof, deflated, and with the transom folded first and then the bow over the top of the transom, then lashed down. The 8hp Johnson, 56 lbs, will get us on a plane but at WOT it sucks quite a bit of gas. Most of the time I putz at slow speed. I have had runs of several miles to reach a fishing area but that is infrequent. I think something in the 2hp to 3hp range would be more practical and I've been checking Crag's List for a small outboard but this is not the time to do it.

Loopy idea!

John, that's a great idea for raising the dink with the loops for the stern tubes. We usually just manhandle ours over the forward lifelines to get it back on board, or use the spare jib halyard to raise it bow first from the D rings inside the bow. Thanks for the idea.

John Nantz, Yes, I used to race. That was in a past life. I still have a T-Bird on a trailer but it hasn't been in the water for many years now. The boat in the picture does not race.
