Earlier this season I topped off the fuel tank, and then again today. The difference in hours on the engine and the amount of diesel gives me a burn rate of 0.45 gallons per hour. That look about right?

Engine is Yanmar 3YM30AE (Thanks for noting that, Greg)

What engine do you have?

I have a Yanmar 2GM20 and I get around that...

Our 3YM30 burns 0.7 gph on average. That’s with predominantly cruising at 2800 RPMs and a little idling around the marina.

The engine hour meter does not know if you are idling at the dock (burning very little fuel) or motoring at cruising speed (burning lots of fuel). Burn rate is obviously related to engine loading. So trying to determine fuel burn rate by simple division is difficult for comparison purposes.

FWIW my burn rate for the same engine is about 2.5 l/hr or 0.67 gal(US)/hr. We cruise at about 2.800 rpm and idle minimally. If I were to estimate our idle to cruising ratio it would average about 1:6

With our 3YM20, we got 0.45 gallons per hour extremely consistently, and the vast majority of those hours were at 2800 rpm.

Picking up my 343 at City Island NY and motoring to Westbrook Ct (rainy and wind out of east) for 11 hrs, I used approximately .6 GPH. Bottom was clean and tide change canceled out over trip. 2700 rpm for the most part.

Average for my 2008 3YM30 is .7gph, largely at ~3,000rpm indicated cruise over the three seasons I've owned it.

My boat has a 3YM20. My boating is a mix of day sails and long cruises. I log my fuel usage and hours on every fill up and it have never seen a burn rate as low as 0.45gph. I usually cruise @ 3000rpm. I average about 0.8gph. This corresponds fairly well to Yanmar's published curve. Of course, my burn rate varies quite a bit depending on how I use the boat. I think it is best to be conservative, I would hate to run out of fuel in the middle of Lake Huron.
