Wrong!
If my stern rail or any of the rails on my
boat were made of chrome plated steel, a
magnet would stick to it. Not only that, my
electric autopilot would be going haywire
when I set it on course and put it on
"Automatic." :naughty:

So you are saying that you have chrome
plated stainless steel?
Have you considered chrome plated brass? Or some
alloy where your alledged steel is not 316 or one of the
other stainless steel formulations but enough not to be
noticeably magnetic, but still less expensive than true
stainless?
Yes, plain iron is the most magnetic. When you get
to alloys? Is all stainless non magnetic?
Now look at finish of your stern rails. Highly polished
stainless or chrome plated?
Now to mix it up, read this:

Understand not all stainless is non magnetic and alloys
can be non magnetic.
Humm...
It is often said that stainless steel is stainless steel
forever... that is except when it is welded, even with
stainless steel rods. There are changes because of
the temperatures and curing [tempering] involved.
So, tell us again, what are his stern rails made of?

"Chrome plated" stainless?
this is where it all starts..... someone reads something in print, and because of the lack of experience in the field, its misunderstood or taken out of context.... and rumors get started.
Or, the information is applied in a situation where it only serves to confuse and possibly cause damage to outcome, because the person receiving the information doesnt know any better either.....
Im not saying the information about stainless steel is all wrong, but if you dont know
how to use the information, it can be misleading and only adds to the confusion... which doesnt do any good.
the railing will be polished stainless steel.
and chromed over brass is more expensive and wont last a fraction as long as stainless steel..... chromed carbon steel is not an option, but some manufactures make railings that are made of anodized aluminum. but not very common these days....
