Robert, true, claiming and ownership are two different matters. However, as the saying goes "possession is 9/10's of the law" (or something like that). I guess the owners could say they never meant to abandon the boat long term and where "forced" to leave it by the CG. However, and anyone that knows better please correct me, the fact that it was abandoned and left adrift opens it up to salvagers who could claim it and possess it possibly to "sell" it back to the Insurance company.
Here is an interesting question... if you anchor your boat and walk away from it is it abandoned and open for salvagers? I would say not. The fact that they left it adrift might be the key factor here... Your thoughts?
