I do have a stern light that plugs into boat it's on a shaft about 4ft tall, but I am guessing I need one on mast. Running wires up mast is not a problem, do I just mount it to top of mast?

When sailing most new standard all around steaming lights on a pole now a days have a plastic shield which let's the light to do double duty and function as a standard stern light. Some are even designed to retract into the stern deck. Down almost flush for night sailing and popup for while under power. This is all you need.
This is what I did.
Its a solar LED walkway light. It broke off it's post so I just screwed it to the top of the mast. I keep one in each winch hole as well.
NOTE: This light isn't good enough for our CG. It has to be visible from 2 KM to be good enough. I don't think this quite cuts it.

Lot's of good info, I don't know what pertains to lakes but a good and free read.
These are the lights I use: http://www.duckworksbbs.com/hardware/electrical/il-560-211x/index.htm. Because of the infrequent use of the boat, I don't have an onboard power system. They are portable, you mount the base, and clip the lights on when you need them. They are LED, and use very little power from 4 AA batteries (I've left them on intentionally to see how long the batteries would last - I got 4 days continuous use before they got a bit dim, and about 9 days continuous before they went out completely). I have three - my bow light (red and green), a 120* white stearn light for when I'm sailing, and a 360* stern light that I use for motoring (I simply swap the two when I need to - they use the same base). I put a shackle on my all around stern light and hoist it upside down on the backstay about 2/3 the way up for anchoring. That way, it can swing without hitting the mast. Works great.

IL has the same requirements as OK (maybe other states) and if you are less than 23 ft you aren't "required" to have lights at all
, but should display them "if practical". If over 23 ft (or imo the safest MINIMUM way to do it), you need the red/green bow lights, a white light visible from the stern (usually a 120 deg. light pattern but go 180, you'll see why in a sec), and a 180/210 deg. "steaming" light (also white, midway up the mast facing forward).
1)When under sail you run red/green bow and stern lights.
2)When under motor power (sails or no sails makes NO difference), run the bow, steaming, and stern lights.
3)When at anchor, run only the steaming and stern lights, not the bow. This meets the criteria for a 360 deg. all-around white light.

I have search and many sites that I could purchase a bifold for my n17 but and that is a very big"but" and yes there is a joke there! I could build one much cheaper. I can picture in my head, but hopefully someone has done this!?!
Yeah Bill, I wasn't trying to imply that by that ad you should buy one of theirs. It was more like an idea sort of thing. I'm not knocking this company not one bit, but it looks kind of high dollar. Probably a very fine product.
I too have considered building one myself. There's one on this 380 I'm dealing with that is built out of 1/2" tinted plexi that looks VERY nice. It can not be that hard to build. I think an important criteria would be the removable hinges, so that you could remove them on long sails to get them out of the way altogether.
If need be, I'll try and get some detailed pics of them later today.

If you are on facebook you can go to the morgan group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/morganyachts/ and go to pictures and then to Morgan 24 folder and you can see the doors I made for mine at home out of a teak colored Azek (a pvc material, in face I replaced all my teak with this material it is maintenance free unless you want to clean and shine it. I am not sure how to post pictures here. Do not know how to find the URL. I used 1/4" clear plexiglas, and made 1/8" oak panels and some screen holders to be able to have privacy or to remove them.

let's see if this works?? I believe you can also go to the project folder on the Facebook morgan area I think they are there if my attachments here do not work. Huh! it worked, click on the photos to enlarge them. There is a special PVC glue for the joints but I used 2 2.5-3" stainless screws predrilled of course at each joint, Need a table saw Pretty easy project, ordered hinges which allow me to lift the doors out If I want.
