Reading a spelling book along the way might proove helpful too. I don't believe the O'Day 30 is designed to be an A cliassified off shore vessel. Bermuda is quite alone out there and while the Bahamas are more protected, they are not for the feint of heart either and the further south to the Caribbean you sail, the bigger the water is too. Just so you know. Also you have to consider what capacities your boat has for long distance cruising. It is nice to have enough fuel to motor hundreds of miles between fill ups, lots of water supply, etc.

Salut nouveau propriétaire de Rigalio,
Since a quick check on the net shows Rigalio in the Bahamas but having gone down the ICW it evidently can make it to the Bahamas and back!
The boat can make it to Bermuda and the Bahamas in the right season... but do you have the knowledge and capacity to do it? Bermuda is a very usual first open sea destination. Since you wish to start from Halifax, getting to Halifax form Lake Champlain will give you a good idea of your capacities at sea.
There will be certain modifications to do to Regalio to make it seaworthy enough to brave the Atlantic. Your learning curve, since you are new to sailing, will be greater than the mods to the boat!
You will be much better off to learn seamanship than spelling for this endeavor. (sorry Barnacle Bill I couldn't resist the cheap shot, besides I surmise that Rigalio's English is better than your French).
You will need enormous amounts of preparation and become a Jack-of-all-trades to fix everything that breaks on the trip.

I was wondering, it's my dream to some day sail through Caribbean Islands and maybe farther south toward South America. What do you mean by the 'seas tend to get bigger as you go farther south'?

I understand the seas as you get to the Roaring 40's, just suprised to learn this!

Smaller boats than an O'Day 30 have made such trips piloted by sailors who were just as determined as yourself with less knowledge and experience than you. I've always believed that it has to do more with the knowledge and experience of the sailor than just the boat he sails.

With that said, just make sure that you do all the necessary modifications to the boat along with preparations needed for the trip. While en route on your journey, always have a back up plan just in case your original plan fails. This applies to everything including parts, equipment, and destinations. I say go for it!

Bigger boats such as 50 footers have
had extreme difficulty in the frequent
storms of this area of Atlantic.
Sometimes call 'Noreasters'.

And about your crew? Are they trained
in event you croak?

Forget the bird and sail close to the U.S.
coast. And live to tell us about trip.

Typical assumption based on assumed outcomes on events that did not happen.

Today this is called Monday Morning Quarterbacking.

It is analogous to assuming you cannot make it home in a sailboat without a motor.

Sailing a boat against the wind just takes time and work.

And I would tell our Canadian friend that I am about 30 miles from the southern end of his Great Lake and the Champlain Canal. There is water under the bridges! Imagine that!

The locks are waiting for him...
