Due to some health issues and not getting what we wanted done at home we didn't get to the boat until mid-April in Florida instead of Jan :cry:. Also since we left Utah in snow and arrived there to 80+ temps didn't get that much done at first, or later for that matter as the heat and later humidity was a bit much for us.

We did enjoy working on the boat for 3+ months even though we only got about a month's worth of work done before heading home late July. It was like having a very small efficiency apartment in Florida that you had to climb a 10 foot ladder every time you wanted to go or come. I guess in retrospect more like having a tree-house in Florida.

So we didn't get in the water, but still enjoyed the boat a lot and now feel very comfortable on her, at least on land ;). So now when we finally get out on the water we have the living on her down pat.

I'm starting to post some of the mods we did get done on the boat and will post a link as they are added to our site.

The first is the install of ...



...the Bimini and the Dodger at the boatyard. That went well with the exception of the area between the arrows above, but should be an easy fix. We don't have a Bimini/Dodge quite as nice as some of the professionally made ones, but do have some features they don't have and are very happy with the outcome.

Hey Sum, we have been wondering how you were doing. I see you have been very busy, not giving Ruth any time off ! Looks like a great Job. I hope we get to see it in person this winter.

We came back north in the spring and will be back down this winter. Getting things organized to install a bigger alternator, solar panels, battery monitor, new battery charger. We still have the davits to install, I'm getting the lifting bridle on the dinghy right now.

Your boat looks great !

looks good, i like the light blue center piece. Gotta have it down here-bimini that is. I can relate to the heat and humidity, I've been in the deep south for all my adult life and every year I think it affects me more. Getting old i guess, the cold is even worse though! I don;t see any forword dodger straps? Might just have to install some straps forword to put some tension on that top? If not you can cut a triangle wedge out of the loose side around were the frame is an then resew it, i think its called a pleat or tuck or something. The wood cockpit toprail looks beautiful! What did you seal it with? You might want to make a cover for it, especially if its sealed with varnish. Varnish last 3-6 months down here then it lets go and peels or flakes off. Its the biggest pain in the arse on any of my boats. I will eventually remove all my topsides wood and replace with a plastic alternative to end the constant sanding and varnishing. But when its done it looks good for a few months. I enjoy all your mods and your detailed description/pics, thank you for sharing!

Looks nice, I, too, think the lighter blue top is a great idea. It appears that you do not have handholds on the sides of the dodger for use when going forward. You really should add them for safety reasons. Can't wait til you're floating and the stories that'll come with that!

Thanks for the input :). There are straps...



...that are behind the window area (see above). I put a couple pleats in things at home, but the frames are a little different geometry wise on the boat. The hardest area to get tight...



... is the flap extension between the bimini and the dodger as I can't put a ton of pull on it and the common sense fasteners. Once we fix the attachment of the side curtains....



... above that don't connect on the boat things should be better. I think we can work on it more there since we take the sewing machine with us. Our main effort next trip will be to get the darn thing in the water and be gone for a while.

The cockpit woodwork that Ruth stripped came out good, but was already showing a little wear after just a couple months. I put on 3 coats of Armada

I used it since there was some woodwork down low in the cockpit that still looked pretty good from the prior year when the previous owner had redone all of the woodwork on the boat using Armada. You can apply over good 'old' finish after a light sanding. I wanted to see how that worked. When we bought the boat the woodwork looked like above, but after a year it looked like what you see in some of the other pictures. Talking to others it looks like the Cetol might wear about the same. We left the new finishes uncovered to see what it would look like when we return. At this point I don't know if we will stay with the Armada or switch to Cetol. One thing we will do is cover the boat and woodwork with the netting that a number of people are now using on stored boats that blocks about 80% of the sun. If you can add coats before having to strip them that would save a lot of time. Ruth put a lot of hot hours into the cockpit as she did that before the dodger/bimini went up.

Anyone else have experience with Armada or something that will last 1 year in Florida? Our problem is that it will probably be 8 months between visits to the boat.

Thanks Stu and the lighter blue did seem to help with heat under the bimini (the purpose of using it). Almost the entire bimini is now covered with solar panels (pictures to come), so the lighter blue there might not make too much difference.

Not sure I've ever seen handholds on a dodger. Do you have pics. or links. Going forward isn't bad on this boat with the lifeline where you step out of the cockpit on the side decks and there are cabin top handholds and the lifelines form there forward. Still I'd like to see what you are talking about.

Dodger Handrails

Sum, you really shouldn't "depend" on your lifelines. I just use mine for guidance rather than dependence.

Here's a picture of our handrail.

Thanks for the pic.. I've never seen that setup. I'll keep it in mind and send you a PM with our e-mail. Add another couple years to my age now and I might be looking for handholds every place ;). After going forward on the Mac all of the time the deck and such on the Endeavour seems huge and easy to get around on. Ruth even feels better now.

Oh, and your dodger looks brand new compared with the one we got with the boat. You couldn't even mount it due to the rips and busted zippers. I would of been ashamed to of advertised that the boat came with a dodger and bimini. I would of just said 'frames'

Here is a look at our dodger with hand rail. I consider it a must have safety item. Should be easy to add to your setup. Really enjoy reading about your and Ruth's projects. I wasn't even surprised when you built your own generator.
