Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1978 Hunter 27. The PO installed a pressurized freshwater system and I cant figure out what this 3" PVC elbow is used for. The ends of the elbow have been reduced and house a 1/2" male fitting. The entire device is sealed. Therefore, I do not know what is inside of it. It is connected to the water pump output hose in between the pump and a one way spring/ball valve. Thanks for any replies.

from your description and the picture, I'd say it is a crude version of an accumulator tank.

Maybe it's a crude homemade charcoal filter? Does it rattle when you shake it?

Likely filled with activated charcoal - those end pieces will screw off. Can't be an accumulator, there is no bladder or provision for an air space.

You don't need it.

If installed with the "hump" upward (nipples below) it will hold a little air, maybe enough to quieten the pump and let it cycle less.. ??

Maybe the PO's local hardware store ran out of 1/2" elbows, and he had to make due with what they had in stock???????????
