Fellow Sailors, I am happy with my recent purchase of a H23.5. However I have found that the both the Main and Jib halyards do not stay in the clam cleats. I have seen rope clutches on some boats and I am thinking of adding a triple rope clutch to handle both halyards and the keel line. I will install the rope clutch with a backing plate. The Jib Sheet is also a mystery to me. You can see in the photos, there is a cam cleat forward of the winch. Is it there in case you don't plan to use the winch? Or, is it run as in the second photo. Thanks.

Your set up is a bit different from mine. Replacing the three clam style jam cleats forward of the winch with a three line rope clutch certainly makes sense. Indeed my 1993 23.5 came rigged with a three line clutch for the centerboard control line as well as the main and jib halyards. That system works a treat.

Your jib sheet should lead from the block on deck directly through the fairlead opening at the forward side of the cam cleat and through the cam cleat. You only use the winch with the jib sheet if the wind is so strong as to require winch assistance to trim the jib. In that case you would put the tail of the jib sheet, after it passes through the cam cleat on to the winch. In light air, the jib sheet would never touch the winch.

I use the small jam cleat to the left of the cam cleat on the port side of my boat to secure my jib downhaul line, which helps me to avoid going on the narrow fore deck when dousing the jib.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards

Hugh

rasemans;

If the jam cleat is original, it is worn out and can be replaced. Please note the screws that secure it do not penetrate inside as there is an aluminum plate encapsalated into the fiberglass which the bolts are drilled and taped into it. Simply remove them but before you do any drilling of futher holes, you will want to use as many holes as you can. The ones that you cannot use, simply put the rope clutch oveer them but caulk the holes. You should have an enough big aluminum plate that will take a tripple rope clutch. I would drill into the area first with a small bit to see if you get metal shavings.

The single cam cleat looks like it was added on to hold the main halyard when the jam cleat got worn and started slipping. You could just replace the 3 jam cleats with new ones. The jib sheets wrap on the winches and can be cleated on the horn cleats. I bought a set of "wincher self tailers" for the winches on our boat. They work great for holding the jib sheets and are easily released.

Thanks to everyone for their help. The advice was excellent and I decided to tap into the existing plate and was able to install the rope clutch securely. I also added cup holders since there were none on my boat. See Photos.
