We are presently doing a shakeout cruise on our 2 month old boat. Every time it rains, despite having a dodger, bimini and connector, we start getting water running down the u channels on either side of the companionway hatch and then down into the two small compartments where we stow the lines which are led to the cockpit. From there, the water comes out the bottom of the two compartments and onto the cockpit floor. Even seems like having a full enclosure is a waste of money as the floor is not dry and all this water is now available to be tracked down below. The much touted arch certainly isn't a plus in these weather conditions, making a leakproof cockpit impossible. The water is being channeled aft from the upper decks along the line corridors. Is this normal on all larger Hunters? Any recommendations to curtail or stop this flow?
Thanks

My experience -- it is normal on all boats with enclosures....design like crazy but water gets into channels and apertures and then migrates elsewhere. maybe a hard enclusure with special scuppers led elsewhere??? design it yourself :--)

my 30 year old 222 doesnt leak in the rain. By the owners own admission she sat completely unattended at the slip shes in for as much as two years and was basically dry inside. Considering the deluge rains that have occurred during that period I consider it pretty rain proof. I would expect at least as much from a boat worth over 150 times more.

The original poster is referring to his cockpit, not the interior.

As to the cockpit leaks, I don't recall ever being on any boat which didn't get some water in the cockpit during a rainstorm

If you want to stay dry.. throw out the hook and go inside the cabin :)

But seriously, I don't think I have ever seen a cockpit floor that didn't get wet to some degree when it rained. Look on the bright side, at least it's only the bottom of your feet getting wet! When it rains and I'm out sailing, all of me gets wet.

Perhaps some of that raised cockpit flooring like Dri-Dek and a door mat just inside the cabin would help?

Cheers,
Brad

I don't really get that much water in cockpit when it rains and not like you say,I usually zipper up the middle window on my dodger to keep things dry and did make small patches for the opening on arch.
I do keep a old throw away towel at compainway steps to dry feet off.

So what you are saying canuck is the rain is getting into the guide channel for the slider. Is there a way to cover that part up with some owner designed sunbrella cover? I'm thinking a strip on the exposed part either screwed or glued down would solve the problem. If it is coming in the forward end of the channel you could just run some caulk to make a dam.
I know on my boat the cockpit stays dry even in hard blowing rain if I put the curtains down.

Do you have a sea hood? If not, you should. This prevents water from infiltrating the slider rails. Then your dodger should be affixed to the aft end of the sea hood. I have a full enclosure and the only water which infiltrates, and as others have said - it will, is around the fittings for the traveler atop the arch. It was impossible to seal that off and still allow the traveler to operate. The cockpit deck gets a few drips in a heavy rain but not a drop gets under the dodger, on the bridge deck, or on the cabin trunk beneath the dodger. In the rain we keep a fluffy towel on the bridge deck so our walking and the dogs walking does not bring water below.
