My trip to Ocracoke

Hello All

Last weekend the kids were out of school on Friday and I was also off of work. We also saw record high temperatures for the month of March.

So............., I took two of my kids on a 3.5 day weekend sail to Ocracoke Island. I've attached a PDF file that chronicles the adventure.

Hey Thinwater... I hope you noticed the Yo-yo rig. That is a suggestion that YOU gave me about a year ago. I love the fact that I can put three of these pre-rigged in a tupperware with all of the extra tackle I'll need. Nice and compact! Now I just need to catch a fish...

Good story, brings back memories. I think our boats are so slow that it seems is unavoidable to run into the ferries on the channel. Being able to borrow that truck must made a big a big difference as being on foot like we were our range was limited. There were no taxis on the Island while we were there.

Hey Benny

We hoofed it to the beach on Friday but you are correct... we did feel lucky borrowing the truck. The beach access is about 2 mi. or 45 min. If you are sight seeing along the way and stop in a shop or two it is no big deal.

I consider Lake Haven (behind the pub) my home port at SML but I no longer have a slip there. I used to keep a Coronado 25' at the lake but now I'm strictly a trailer sailor. I'm still on their news letter list and launch from there several times each summer, so it still feels like "my marina". Visa and Pelican are nice places but they are on the wrong side of the lake and would add 45 min. to my drive. I was at the lake two weeks ago but had to launch from the state park. Lake haven was not open for the season yet. They opened last weekend. If you get back up this way, let me know and we can hit the lake for a day.

Most of the boats at Lake Haven came from me. I have many good memories of Gloria and kFrank. Gloria could make a mean dish of food. Not sure if they spend much time there or not as they have a house in Florida as well. You must live in Lynchburg or near Bedford. I use to live in Bedford county and where Conrad's is at Lake Corner, I built that when it was all woods with a moon shine still behind me. I sipped a little of the good shine in my younger days. Boy it has changed and I can remember when there were no homes on that lake.

My home is Meadow Lawn Farm near Goshen behind the Scout Camp. Had to sell it in 1990 to take care of my Aunt's medical bills but do enjoy maintiaing the daysailor flleets at that scout camp plus the ones owned by the Bluje Ridge mt. Council as well. Take care. Once in a while, I somehow meet a person that we have spoken to before. In this case, Rob berthed a boat at a marina at Smith Mt. lake which I fondly remember as I had many friends there. Sadly I learned from Rob of the passing of one of the owners.

Interesting, he was a professor at VMI where I graduated from. It brings back alot of fond memories. Thank you Rob for emailing me. Check your email.
