I've got 100' of rode, and it about half fills the bucket. In the lake where I sail, we're not allowed to anchor out in the middle, so I'd never be anchoring in any more than 20'.

I have extension cords that long. Just coil the dang thing and hang it on the pulpit. N&E and I use 300 feet of 5/8 with substantial chain. That won't fit in a bag.

On my vacuum cleaner at home there are two cleats. One of these cleats can be turned 180 degrees to turn the horn down and spill the line. If the line is wound in a figure 8 pattern when it is spilled it will run free without kinking. For this small length of rode I believe that is the method I would use and just secure it with a small bungee.

Ok eveybody, jump on it. What's the obvious problems I'm missing here?
Well, the obvious is that people walking by your boat at the dock will use it as a trash can...oops.. that's what it is isn't it? heh, heh.

Sumner's solution is a very common way of handling ground tackle on small boats. Keep it in a bag like he does or in a plastic bucket with a hole in the bottom and a handle like I do.... However..... bolting it to the outside of the pulpit is totally unnecessary and may even be dangerous.... and it looks pretty tacky (since you're asking for opinions I hope you don't mind mine) You bring it on deck when needed... put it in a locker when not.

I can't see any advantage to bolting the bucket to the pulpit in such a manner... I would never leave my ground tackle out on deck when sailing. Waves or no...

I'm hoping Sumner adds a windlass to the Endeavor... and that there is a proper rode locker. A 40 pound Rocna with 40 feet of 5/16 chain is alot of weight (like 80-90 pounds) to haul without help, at any age.

Using a bag

I would think a bag would be preferable. And a nylon mesh bag preferable over a canvas bag. Might not be as salty looking, but would not hold water, and would let your rode dry. Also would not hold water in case of water over the bow, or a heavy rain.

Hey you saying I'm old? Well I did turn 68 last month, so I am getting up there . We have only been on the one trip with the Endeavour at this point, but did anchor out. We bought a 35 lb Manson before the trip, the boat also came with a 35 lb. CQR, and I was surprised that getting it up wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but those bow rollers help a lot. We bought another bow roller that will go on when we get back so both anchors will be on one.

One nice thing about Florida is that we can anchor in 5-10 feet of water, so you are only lifting 8-10 feet of chain plus the anchor weight. The Endeavour does have an anchor locker and one rode was in it. We didn't put the one we were using in a bag, but if I post a picture of what we used I'm sure we will get laughed at ;), but it is on the site pictures I believe.

I'm hoping to figure out how to put a windlass on the boat at some point (manual) and might try and make it, but the Endeavour does have some problems in mounting one, but a few people have done it,

Yep...... you're old my friend.... me too... and that's my point. I know you're in damn good shape but I'm suggesting you look at it from this angle: consider a scenario where RUTH may have to handle the anchor, and, at some point you will be anchoring in deeper water. Anyhow.... as you start spending more time on the boat you'll see the advantage.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f14/selecting-a-windlass-1475.html

The negative aspect is the cost, of course.... but it will enhance the boat's resale value and probably save you a lot of money spent on BenGay.

I think this is what I'll do.

Keep the bucket in a lazarette until needed, then put it on the deck while anchored.

I agree, it does look tacky.

Is the boat so small it does not have an anchor locker?
I know I'm not the brightes bulb in the room but what is wrong with using the locker?

Sum, I'm pretty sure you'll find that once you use the Manson you'll never use the CQR again.

Maine Sail has done a lot of anchor testing, as I'm sure you're aware. Compared to the Manson, the CQR is like a rock on a rope.

Pre-1985 Catalina 22s do not have anchor lockers. If I had one, I'd certainly be using it.

That is just wrong
sounds like you need a bigger or newer boat.

Well, you showed me yours, I'll show you mine. :)

Smart and stylish, the Capri brand of luggage is known for its rugged durability. You'll appreciate the easy care vinyl construction, and the real leather strap is guaranteed to outlast the luggage itself. Plus it fits in an overhead compartment!

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
Inside is 225 feet of 1/2 inch 3 strand rode, 15 feet of chain, and I just click the strap around the pulpit stanchion, cleat the bitter end and deploy the anchor.
The extra zippered compartment holds spare thimbles and chafe gear.

Yep we have been using a 25# Manson on the Mac for a year now and love it. We bought the 35# before we had closed on the Endeavour for just that reason. Everyone was out of them at the time, but found one at a West Marine south of Tampa and bought it so we would have it for the first trip if we bought the Endeavor and we did and it worked as expected on a couple different anchorages.

I think we are also going to buy a Fortress FX-23 as a backup. We often put two anchors down in a Bahamian Moor and I'm not sure if we would then use the Manson and CQR or the Manson and Fortress. Guess we will have to experiment some.

Joe at some point we will be trying to figure out how to adapt a windlass to the boat. If I could find either a Royal manual or Lewmar 555 manual used in good shape at a good price we could probably afford it now otherwise we will have to wait a bit but I agree that one would be nice. When I fractured my shoulder on Lake Powell Ruth used the hand sheet winches to get the anchor up and lines in. It was a mess, but we/she did it,

The Fortress should work just fine in that arrangement, since it'll still be pulling in only one direction and not be "asked" to reset, since Danforth types don't reset as well as the "spade" types. They might, but I wouldn't sleep on one.

That is kind of what I was thinking. I'll give it a try if we get one. They are a lot lighter to put down and bring up vs. the Manson, but the Manson will for sure be what we use with only one anchor down.

Thanks,

Sum

Sum,
Is the Endeavor in in Mr. Bills neck of the woods?
If so you might try Sailorman in Ft Lauderdale or if it's on the left coast, Don's Salvage in Clearwater might have a used windlass.

Perfect....... but get a bucket with a handle. Put a few holes in bottom for drainage and circulation. Then rig a simple system to allow you to CLIP the bucket to a stanchion or lifeline. I coil my line down when storing so I will usually flake out the needed amount on deck before deploying the anchor.... if you just stuff it in bucket you really don't need todo that.

I used to store my rode in a bag in the starboard lazarette of my C22, the anchor hanging from the bow pulpit. When I was ready to anchor, I would just walk the bag forward, attach the the anchor, cleat off the bitter end and let fly.

I guess it depends where you sail and such, but twice getting an anchor down fast saved us from some trouble. Personally I like knowing I can get the anchor and rode over the side in 30 seconds or less if need be, so I'm not in favor of storing the anchor or rode where you can't do that or in a manner that you can't do that.

Just my personal feelings,

Sum
