Nice job! If the cost makes the difference to the safety equipment being where and when it's needed than I say you have done us all a tremendous service.

Great idea!!Now how about coming up with an idea about what to do with all our perfectly good emergency flares.Out of date is what i meant.

Super idea. I made a diving flag buoy sometime ago but never really used it since it was terrible. Your clean system made me rethink my old one (threw it out). Copied yours ( will all due credits when asked) and now I have both a MOD buoy & a diving flag buoy all in one. I just change the flags.
Also, I modified yours a little. I cut it in half; threaded the ends; treated them crazy glue to harden them; and connected them using a rod threaded connector ($2.30). Helps with storage in a cockpit bench and out of sight when not there.

I made mine 6' long partly cause thats the length the rod came in, but also not "too long" to prevent storage right on deck attached to the Bouy and "at the ready" to toss over in a MOB situation...

OK to store a dive bouy...but..

I tried to make one this weekend. I put some lead shot in a piece of 2.5" diameter PVC pipe, put the pole in the middle and filled it with polyester resin. For some reason my resin did not kick off. I went back out today and tried dribbling extra catalyst on top of the wet resin... I'll check it in a few days. I've never had resin fail to kick before. Very strange.

A little bitty flag will be very hard to keep in sight from any significant distance. Just think about how hard it is to find a light plane that you hear flying overhead. The plane is typically less than 3 miles away and has a 30 to 40 foot wingspan. But it is the narrow dimension that determines how far away you can see something. So make your orange flag square and as big as practical.

It's kind of a trade off with being so big the wind blows it over and you don't see anything...

A taller option is to use an old (or new, if you MUST) whip antenna. I have an 8-footer on my home-made pole.

I've been thinking about this and wonder if it might be a good idea to attach one of those glow sticks to the top of the pole. They sell red and orange ones. You could quickly crack it and then throw the pole overboard. Even if you forget to crack it, the MOB could crack it.

????

and some plastic streaming red tape to the top, like used on laser..
