+1 on the mast boot idea.

Even simpler, make the boot out of a piece of sunbrella the color of the deck. Put a strip of velcro around the base of the mast just above where the radio cable goes in and another around the bottom piece of trex. Sew velcro top and bottom to a fitted sheet of the sunbrella and put some velcro or lacing where it comes together in back to tighten it up. Tuck the cables under the bottom edge to really neaten up the mast base.

That's a pregnant idea Carl!! :dance: I like that! I bought a new sail repair kit a couple of years ago and I've been thinking of doing some stuff with Sumbrella. I have a couple of sail covers that are made of Sumbrella that I've been saving to make stuff out of. What the heck. I got into leather work a few years ago and I've had some success in making stuff for knives and hatchets so why not get into sewing stuff for my boat? I've been thinking of making a boom tarp out of Silnylon which is lighter in weight and not as noisy as Polytarp. Guys have been making camping Tarps out of nylon bought a Walmart and waterproofing them with Silicone mixed with kerosene. I may give that a try too.

I am curious why you have the trex spacer between the mast and the mast hinge. It seems to me if you built up the deck under the hinge and bolted the hinge directly to the mast, it would give you more options, for example, glass in the spacer and cover with the mast boot, etc. That would eliminate some of the weight and stiffness issues. I am trying to picture it, but I can't see why the rigging would care where the spacer is, as long as the spreaders and mast head are at the right height. Or am I missing something?

Information on mast manufacturers.

Z Spar was located outside of Gainesville, Florida. They left the US in the 90's without going into detail. US Spars in Gainesville is basically Z Spar sections but the company is owned by the same folks who own Z Spar in Europe. Thus US Spars is using Z Spar mast sections and materials.

Kenyon Isomat was bought out by Z Spar in the 90's but went bust when Z Spar left the US. For those who are looking for old Kenyon Isomat spars and parts, contact the same fellow who use to represent Kenyon Isomat now at Charleston Spars located in Charlotte, NC and his name is Jim Culibert.
