Love my 1989 Oday 35 but we've got some fairly strong off odors up around the sanitary hold tank. Any suggestions? Thanks all!

I had the same thing on our boat when we bought her. I ripped out the entire head/holding tank and hose system and started brand new. The hoses were completely permeated and the take stunk. Supposedly the tanks can't permeate, but ours never lost their funk even after a winter sitting outside and after a good cleaning. Tanks are cheap and it allowed me to install a larger one while I was at it.

On my 34, I replaced all the hoses, head, removed holding tank and cleaned completely. It's been about 5 years with no recurance of odours. Use bleach and top line Hose(white).

Thanks, seems to be the consensus. Looks like I have a new project!

Chris,

Do you have a brand name on the white line hose?

Sloopy,

The book gave me information that I had not even thought about. It is starting place. I would consider trying to replace hoses without replacing tank unless it really needs to be.

Try cleaning tank and all lines with muratic acid solution. Then you will have to replace any caulking, gaskets, and o rings as the acid does a job on them. But it will clean reside from all lines and tank. You will need rubber gloves, face mask, rubber hoses with rubber fittings, funnels, and rubber or plastic protective mats.

However, the stuff does clean and can be dumped into sewer or even overboard as it will dilute to nothing.

I am looking for place to put small onboard water tank so as not to use harbor water. Harbor water seems to be big part of smells issues.

May the winds be with you.

Trident 101 is what I used and what Head Mistress Peggie recommends. If you're at all concerned with the tank, now is the time to replace it AND go bigger. 13 gallons is just too small for this boat.

I figure that first you need to figure out if you have permeation, or a leak that is just venting gas.

Peggy I assume will have much to say...

The hose I installed is Trident VAC XHD Sanitation & Potable water 11/2" ID.
