as long as the environment is drastically changed, i see no reason for base to not work. i use vinegar as it is easiest on hands and equipment...
pickles etc have other things besides just vinegar in em to encourage stuff to grow.

What about washing things down with hydrogen peroxide? If i recall it oxidizers biological material as it breaks down into water... No hazardous cleanup or residue left...

Just did some googleing, seems this is a highly recommended idea... Haven't found any hard evidence to share yet, but h2o2 seems like it might be the best mildew solution we have as has no toxic.compounds, is really cheap, and seems to destroy the spores so they can't be used as nutrients for a regrowth...

If the weather holds out tomorrow i will try spraying some in the lazerette where i have some black stuff to see how it works

Worked quite well. After 24hrs the musty smell from the laz was completely gone and while there is still plenty of dusty dirt looking residue that needs cleaned left on the surfaces, the mildew is gone and it only smells like some dirt needs washed off now. I used it on various interior pieces, including a cushion and had great results as well.

In summary, I strongly recommend h2o2 for boat cleaning.

that sounds great and safe!.. How did you apply it? just use a sprayer and mist is over the area or did you use a wet rag or sponge?

Really easy, I bought a couple large bottles of hydrogen peroxide from the grocery store and filled an old windex spray bottle (after rinsing it clean) and just misted it on. The lazerette sounded like someone poured a bunch of pop rocks into a glass of water for about 30 minutes afterwards

You should wear a pair of rubber gloves though as the spray bottle will probably leak a little on your hand (they usually do), and if it sits for too long (10-15min +) it will leave a white "burn" on your skin. doesn't hurt, but looks bad.
