Hi all,
Will wine freeze hard if left over winter? We're stripping the boat and making some decisions, but I'm going to be useless in an hour if I keep drinking.

Bottled wine will shatter when it freezes due to its low alcohol content (10-14%) wont yield much 'freezing point depression' and 14%EtOH wine will freeze at ~20°F. 'Box' wine 'may' be ok but may also 'split it seams' plus 'box' wine has an finite 'expiration date' and no matter if frozen or not the expiration date is the date that it starts to go 'skunky', albiet a little bit longer if 'frozen'/refrigerated.

Rick:

There are several box wines that are not too bad. Much better than 2 Buck Chuck. No, it's not Silver Oak.
Hadda google them. In this economy a box of 2 Buck Chuck starts to sound pretty good. :) Thanks for the tip Steve.

I leave wine on my boat all the time, even over the winter -- it has never frozen.

Of course, YMMV :)

Rick:

No 2 buck chuck in the box, 750ml bottles. It comes from Trader Joes.

It cost more in places other than California (very low wine tax). A good alternative for about $3.50 a bottle is Blue Fin also at TJ's. Also the Yellow Tail at Costco is great for the price $9/ 1.5L.

..and yes wine does not do well below freezing or in very hot weather. We have left bottles on the boat in the summer and had corks that had been pushed out about 1/2" from the expansion.

Two Buck Chuck is sold in some states as Crane Lake

It's about the same price here as TBC in CA.

As for box wines--which we call "Chateau Carton" (pronounced "cartone")--they've come a long way in the last few years. I wouldn't recommend Franzia, but Black Box is actually quite good. And so are a couple of others. Not cheap, though!

For the "box wine ychhh" crowd, I put it in a nice decanter and put a VERY pricy empty bottle out in plain site...and prove every time that perception really is 99% of most people's reality. :D

Think "Wine Cellar" which keeps bottled wines at a set temperature range and humidity. I don't maintain a wine cellar but I have noticed that even beer (shudder) that gets heated and cooled repeatedly can get a little skunky. That has not stopped me from drinking them though.
Have fun draining 'the tanks'!

Yellow Tail Merlot is actually my favorite red. Yellow Tail Sauvignon Blanc on the white. $9/1.5 L is a terrific buy. We usually pay about $12 up north and a bit less in FL.

The trend has been started of sealing good quality wine bottles with screw caps and I like it. I have followed the old time principle of laying wine bottles on their side so the cork remains moist and prevents air from getting in. Upon opening a bottle I would inspect the cork to see how far up was the wine absorbed. A totally soaked cork is a telltale of a spoiled wine. I have also patienly waited for aspiring waiters to fumble with their corkscrews to open a bottle, pour a glass and then fumble to try and put the cork back on. All those rituals and practices can be put to rest just by turning the screw cap. Just take it away from the waiter before he tries to screw it back on as the wine needs to breathe.

Plastic flowers with a crystal decanter?

Do the boxes have a screw cap?

A serious answer: They actually have something much better: a bladder that prevents air from getting to the wine for as long as it takes to empty 3-5 liter box. I enjoy a glass of wine with my dinner (I also love to cook with wine...sometimes I even put it in the food), but I'm not gonna open a bottle for just a glass, maybe two, then maybe not want another one of that "flavor" for days 'cuz by then most of a bottle of good wine is no longer drinkable. The better box wines are the perfect solution. I have a two temp wine fridge in the pantry where I always have a box of merlot and box of chardonnay along with the bottles I open for company.

I agree with you Peggie a box will allow you get a glass of wine while preserving the rest for a latter time. When a bottle of wine is opened it needs to aereate as it will enhance the flavor. For such purpose wine is usually aereated when it is transferred into a decanter. Once in contact with air if the wine is not consumed promptly it will continue to deteriorate and turn into vinager. Regarding temperature, a white wine should be chilled while a red should be consumed at room temperature. That room temperature is not the temperature of the room you are in but the temperature of the room where the wine was aged and stored. Wine cellars are usually maintained around 60-65F. Some wineries will indicate the temperature in the label but many don't so chilling the red slightly is a good practice. Adding a piece of of ice to a glass or Red wine may seem like an abomination to some but may save the flavor of a wine served to warm. There is also a reason why a bottle or red wine is usually green in color and that is to reduce the amount of sunlight received by the wine as sunlight will also degrade the wine. So keep good bottles of wine in a cool dark closet. Ever since the news came out that red wine helps fight Alzheimers I think my memory has improved. I started drinking cheap wines and over the years I have to say that my taste has improved. Now I only drink the better of those cheap wines. A $10 wine will cost you $30 at a restaurant but I equate it to having the same boat but keeping one in the trailer and the other in the water.

2 Buck Chuck is great for making Sangria...! Also not bad for the price. I once gave it to one of our guests who's a wine snob, when they thought they were getting another glass of $40.00/bottle wine. Never said a word and I suspect she never knew the difference.....;) Got a good chuckle out of that one...

Oh and All-u-Get I got the joke....:D Keep drinking...:)

Black Box is great! Keeps well on the boat, stores perfectly and is darn good wine. We're no wine snobs, but do get our wine from a couple of preferred wineries for many years, but BB is nearly as good, and definitely so for the boat!
