have been running my 310 with no engine problems for 10 years (500 hrs) and now i'm going crazy. engine runs for a while and then stalls. have done: rebuilt injectors, changed both fuel filters, new lift pump. got a little better with each fix but still not reliable. i'm thinking to pump out all the fuel and refill with fresh. any ideas?

How long has the fuel been in the tank?? You're probably on the right track since there's been improvement with each fuel related fix. If you empty the tank, and you have a view port make sure the tank is clean too so it is not all for naught. Any other symptoms??

oldguy,

I've been running our M25 without stabilizer since 1998, only add biobor and sometimes water displacement stuff. I have found diesel fuel doesn't "go bad" like gasoline. Just my experiences.

Have you checked to see if the fuel pickup screen has been removed from your fuel fill line inside the tank?

There's a handy "Critical Upgrades" topic that covers a LOT of M25 series engine issues that you may find helpful: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,5078.0.html

One of our technical gurus has recently replaced his M25XP with a b (after over 5,000 hours on his original 1988 engine). I am sure he would be more than glad to help you out. As I've mentioned here on this board a number of times, our engine systems are almost identical. While our guru doesn't read any other boards than our C34 Forum, please feel free to join us there, post your question and I'm sure he'll respond with helpful suggestions.

Does your buzzer sound when you turn on your key and before you start your engine?

It's a hole that is large enough to see the inside. some tanks have them and some don't. Some owners add them. You can use them to see inside (with a flashlight) and clean out the tank. Similar to the ones on the fresh water tank.

Stu:
what's a fuel pickup screen? no one but me has worked on the boat, so if it was there when i bought it (new) then it's still there. should i remove this and check it for blockage? is it in the feed line to the engine?

og, read the link, fuel pickup screen in the end of the fuel hose from the tank to the engine. Only way to know is to look. I don't know if the C310 skippers have experienced this "issue" on their boats, but it is something to check if you're gonna be down there anyway. It's at the end of the fuel line inside the tank.

I had the same problem couple years ago and did the same things but had to change the fuel to resolve the issue. I used the fuel pump to empty the tank by putting a long hose on it. Made emptying the tank fairly easy. Gary

well, after many $100 and a lot of work I finally solved this problem. The Raycor fuel filter on the bulkhead behind the engine has a manual pump in the inlet to the filter, probably for refilling the filter after inserting a new cartridge. This pump is a rubber plunger that rides inside a brass cylinder and is actuated by unscrewing a knurled plastic knob on the top of the filter and pull/pushing the knob. In normal operation the fuel flows around the soft rubber edges of the plunger into the filter. I found these edges to be covered with a sticky goo that was adhering to the brass cylinder and obviously restricting the fuel flow. Removed, disassembled and cleaned the Raycor to solve the problem.

Lessons learned: put fuel additive in before storage, maybe inspect/clean this little manual pump every couple hundred hours of operation.

other things I did before this: changed the Raycor cartridge (it was pretty dirty but not cause of problem), changed engine spin-on fuel filter, rebuilt injectors (they were dirty but not cause of problem), replaced fuel lift pump (old one probably ok), removed/inspected the two fuel tubes in the tank that led out to the tank exit valves (no screens or obstructions here.. difficult remove operation).

thanks to all for suggestions. hopefully someone will find this experience useful.

I those Racor filter heads there is also a little rubber ball check valve that can get plugged up as well.
