Just an update. Looks like my intended Canada Day splash date is not gonna happen . I've got most of the deck hardware off and ready to sand and paint but once again the weather is not co-operating. On the other hand I did manage to get the keel free'd up and it has now dropped down and sitting at about a 20 degree angle and looks as though it will come down all the way once in the water. I will have to replace the pivot bolt though as it looks somewhat questionable to me. The bow sprit will be comming off tomorrow likely in bit and pieces. And stupid me when I did the bow hull repairs I managed to plug the scupper for the anchor locker drain. Climbed in her today and discovered 5 inches of water over the sole in the v-berth. Its amazing to me how much water comes in thru that hatch. At least now I have a good appreciation as to why the drain was there lol. Oh well most cabin and deck sanding can be done with a belt sander and will go very quickly and the first few days of next week look good so maybe :). Unstepped the mast today and will make up a drawing of a steel tabernakle to take to a welder to make up. We will pin the mast in order to raise / lower it etc. I will have to step it one more time and then take measurements for all new shrouds as the current ones are to long. The fore and aft stays are good for length and appear to be in good shape as well. Once the deck and cabin are painted then I can bolt the new ports on as well. Anyhow it looking like maybe mid July she will be ready (fingers crossed).

Happy sailing,
Brina

OK I'm putting out the "damp rid" so that you get nothing but sunny days.

Sorry to hear about the flood Brina. I hope all that beautiful wood work is ok.
If you're not experienced with a belt sander, be careful. They can take off a lot of material in a short time.

The wood is ok as I alway seal all wood with a coat of polyester to at least above the gunwhales lol. The anchor locker in the forepeak is recessed so any water over the bow or rain etc flow right in to the locker. Once it fills up to the cut out in the forepeak bulkhead then it simply flow over the v-berth and down onto the cabin sole an into the bilge, needless to say we have had alot of rain the past week or so. I have taken some tuck tape and taped the hatch shut for now so that should take care of the problem until I get around to drilling out the drain scupper.

I'm use to working with belt sanders lol and yes if running and not being moved will remove a great deal of material very quickly and deeply esp with 60 or 80 grit belts.

On another note what might be the best way to drill a 1 1/4'' hole for a thru hull in a glass hull? I am thinking that a hole saw might the the way to go or drilling a 1/4'' hole and then using a jig saw with a very fine blade.

I use bi-metal hole saws for everything I can and my speed saw (rotozip type laminate cutter) for other than round holes.
I cut a hole in the top of my centerboard trunk yesterday which was interesting. Used a 10" bit with a 6" inch extension up from under the boat (trunk 12" deep) to make sure I cut the thru hull hole in the right spot then used a 1 1/8" hole saw down thru the top of the trunk/bilge.
Worked out fine.

Brina -

Our spring weather has sucked, and my wife's on a new work schedule which usually includes weekends, and my elderly parents now require more of our time, including all of last weekend. Like most people, I'll put the family first, but THEN comes sailing... and today, on the longest day of the year, I blew off a commitment to have my first sail of the year, this evening, in 8-12 kt and a beautiful sunset.

So - you might want to reconsider what you're trying to acheive before launch, maybe defer some of the cosmetic work to the fall, and just go sailing. Just saying.

(and I have also used hole-saws with very good results. In fact, other than a huge standard bit, I can't think of any other way to drill that big a hole in the hull. Spade bits would make a real mess.)

Hiee Ken,

I considered putting off the rest of the paint, but with such a nice looking waterside and bottom having a peeling cabin and decks and cockpit just would't make it very enjoyable. I think I will get her in sometime in July but will miss the long weekend. We do have 2 more one in August and of course Labour Day, so I might get to do a mini cruise after all. I just picked up pretty much the rest of what was needed for coast guard safety gear et al. If it shines on the weekend then the paint will be done by Sunday and the electrical finished by the following weekend. Unfortunately I will not have the funds available to get the tow vehicle inspected and hence no way to get her to the water :(.

Happy Sailing,
Brina

Hiee Merlinuxo,

I think I will go with the hole saw as it seems the best bet for the job at hand. I have been trying to figure out where to mount the mercerator pump and have come to the conclusion that the only sensable place seems right next to the msd. I can then run the anti-syphon loop on the inside of the head bulkhead and out of sight generally and only have to run a single 1 inch line to the port quarter berth where I intend to place the thru hull for sea side pump out.

Happy Sailing,
Brina

PS how goes it with your work will you be in the water soon?

I think I'll have to wait until early in the week to splash. Got a chance to do some paying work and that cuts into the boat time, ya know?
Still need to paint the cove and boot stripes (and allow to dry before the yard paints the bottom), finish the tube for hauling up the centerboard and mount the centerboard.
I ended up getting the paint for the stripes from an auto body supply house. Needed something that was UV stabilized and couldn't find the right color in marine paints.
Hot as heck down here anyways so not missing much sailing, at least until I get a bimini on the boat.

So close I can smell it.........

Got the bottom painted, second (last) coat on the cove stripe this morning and will have the keel mechanism installed this afternoon. Have to anti-foul the inside of the keel lifting line tube and let that dry also this afternoon.
I'll mount and adjust the outboard tomorrom morning and supposed to splash the boat in the afternoon. Home Saturday and ready for the holiday weekend!
Independance from the boat yard! until next time of course.
It is a good yard and marina for anyone looking in the Melbourne FL. area.
You can do your own work except for bottom paint and paint spraying isn't allowed. Super people and great security.
I know it's not as good as on a trailer at home but not a bad alternative.
Pineda Point Marina. http://marinas.com/view/marina/2727_Pineda_Point_Marina_Melbourne_FL
No pool, no tennis courts and no bar - just boats. And the prices are very reasonable for this area.
Hope your weather is cooperating Brina.

Weather :)

Well I am definately missing a splash for this weekend but the weather is good looking so far so I should be able to get the rest of the painting done. Next week the tow vehicle will go in for inspection then have to have the trailer looked at by the police ie vin tag placement etc (home made) then get it inspected and registered. I have about half the cabin and decks (forward) sanded now. I found some more damage up at the forepeek but nothing that can't be temporarily patched and fixed in the fall. I'm hoping for a mid July splash now. Hopefully we'll get a little better then half the season in this year.

Merlinuxo happy to hear that your ready to splash.

Happy sailing,
Brina

Re: Weather :)

Thanks Brina.
I just met a lady at the marina that bought a 22 Catalina that was pretty well stripped of everything that could be obtained without tools.
She asked how to put it together and all I could think of "it's a thousand little jobs but each one needs doing".
May not be a thousand but sometimes it feels that way.
