Hey guys,
I was checking out the tiller on my 26s yesterday, looking at adding something so I can let go of it for short periods of time.
I noticed that there is nothing to hold it up. Meaning, I can't rest my hand/arm/ leg on it. It would lay down directly on the lazerette lid, and rub on it when I'm steering, unless I hold it up.
Is there anything I can use that would hold it up, so I can rest a hand on it?

Oh I installed a kinda home made tiller tamer kinda thing i saw on the net a while back. It's a short piece of tubing with a short rod welded on so it looks like a tee. Drill a hole in the tiller for it to stick in. Run a rope across the boat, through the tubing, to the other side. Pull tight, and the tension holds it in position. When you don't want it, just pull it out, and it's out of the way!

I think someone bent some SS flat metal, and attached from under the tiller to act as a spring.

fwiw, I have a skate wheel under mine, but its a D and totally different setup...

*I also have a jam cleat under the tiller for the times I don't use my AutoPilot.

Tiller support for 26S

Doehunter- here's what I did. Works good. In the long run, if I see wear on the laz hatch from the glides, I will cut an arc from Formica and glue it on for the glides to slide on. Having the tiller up is much more comfortable; I can rest my arm on it and I don't bang my knees! -Paul :)

Maybe cut some strips from a plastic cutting block and mount to lazerette lid with counter sunk screws?

I thought about using a wheel of some sort too. It's kinds goofy, that Macgregor made it that way. I thought about remaking the way the tiller attaches to the vertical tube that goes down to the rudder, but I'm not sure it could take the downward torque it would see when I have me leg or arm resting on the end of the tiller. Maybe a roller is the best answer.

I wonder if a plastic small chair caster would work. It would only require a small hole to be drilled in the bottom of the tiller and the caster pressed in. A caster would roll easily on the lazerette lid without marring and the cost would be minimal. And it should be able to support the weight of an arm or leg easily.

Not having read the whole thread and before I saw atwhite2's post (similar concept) I was thinking perhaps a fine piece of rigging wire from the centre of the pushpit to the about 1/3 of the distance from the tiller post on the tiller. Could even have a bottle screw on it for adjustung the height over time to find the most suitable position. Having it back towards the tiller post as far a possible would be good it terms of keeping it out of the road and having minimum intererence with the action of the tiller.

Another alternative would be a block that fitted over the tiller post and had a slot on top that allowed minimal downward movement of the tiller arm (eg. some sort of SS plate that extends 1 or 2 inches forward of the pivot point and underneatht the tiller arm, similar to what many boats have.

It does frustrate me that the tiller rests on the lazarette, but on the other hand it does not seem to have marked the lazarette at all??

Ida Sailor made a great stainless steel tiller post riser, which I use and enjoy in my Mac 26S (see picture). Keeps the tiller 1-2 inches avove the lazarette cover withour rubbing. However, I've just looked it up in their page and don't see it anymore. But the idea works great. Cheers, Albert

I did it a bit simpler. I cut a piece of a "bunker glide" (plastic strips that take the place of carpeting) It is black, slightly on the soft side. I forget what type of plastic it is.

Anyway, I cut a small square and attached it on the bottom sie of the tiller. The plastic is sift enough that it doesn't make a mark on the fiberglass.

You could also find a "glide" thingy at Home Depot and do the same thing. They have several types. Seems like they are around the cabinet hardware section? They also have some for the bottom of furniture feet.

I have the IdaSailor post riser and laminated tiller. It doesn't look like they sell it anymore. It keeps my tiller from dropping. See the inverted "L" at the hinge point.

If you have a rear Stanchon, streach a shock cord from port to starboard under the tiller and adjust it to the height you want. Cheap and easy. It works for me.

Tie a line to the top rail of the pushpit?

I am totally puzzled by the fact that rudder system is different on the S. I had no idea. Where have I been?
