just took my engine out and the prop shaft dropped causing the thru hull bearing to break. The shaft dropped because the strut was also broken. So I am going to replace the packing gland, the bearing and the strut. I have not done this before. The shaft is out now and the hole plugged. Can anyone tell me in detail (or give me web info), on how I do this and where I get the parts I need. The boat is a 1979 Hunter 30. I am unfamiliar with the exact names of the parts I have to replace.
Also, I am guessing that I will have to put the shaft back in from the inside, since I do not want to remove the rudder. Am I on the right track? Any help would be educational and much appreciated, thanks

First thing is to figure out what is broken. Starting at the engine the shaft with key is in the coupler. It goes out through the stuffing box which is attached to a heavy hose. That hose is attached to the stern tube, sometimes fiberglass as part of the hull but on our Cherubinis is a metal tube. Then the shaft goes through the cutlass bearing which is inside the strut. Given that explanation what do you think is broken? And where? How exactly is the strut broken?

the stern tube is broken, I am guessing that happened because the strut has probably been broken for some time(I have just acquired this vessel). The strut came off with the shaft, and it looks like it snapped where it connected to the piece that secures it to the hull. The stern tube appears to be made of steel. There are 4 bolts around the hole where the stern tube comes out and the shaft goes thru the hull. ?? what are they for? Also, where can I find a replacement stern tube, stuffing box, and strut with cutlass bearing? Really appreciate your response, thanks ed....

Stern Tube

I had the stern tube fracture on my 1980 H30. My yard took the pieces and had a duplicate fabricated at a local metal shop. It was stainless steel and expensive.

Sorry about your shaft problems "Aussie" because it is going to be expensive. The stern tube can be removed and taken to a good stainless shop. Depending upon the break it probably can be repaired. The stuffing box should be fine. You will want to replace the hose and clamps.

Now about that strut. :( It is a bronze alloy and probably not fixable. The company that made it, Dahmer, is out of business. You can still Google and find their website and your strut but no one will answer the phone. Recently there has been mention of another company, Southeastern Foundries( http://southeasternfoundries.com/SEF Marine Items.html ). Good luck with finding a replacement.

One more question for you guys. How is the stern tube attached to the hull? Is it epoxied in? 5200? Fiberglass? thanks
