I am looking for advice and or experience on sailing a C-27. Although this is going to be my first season, I would like to hear how far some of you have sailed on a boat this size. I live in Rhode Island and would like to sail up to Maine in August. Any suggestions?

Maine should not be a problem if you have enough time

The biggest issue you will have is going to be the Canal. You have to time the Canal to go with the flow but it is more then doable in your boat. I know people with Catalina 22s that have gone through the Canal.

Once threw, you have a day up to Boston, a good overnight spot is Peddocks Island. Then you have another days sail to Isle of Shoals (NH/ME border). They would be long days of sailing but it is within reach.

I would suggest you check out the website ActivieCaptain to find good anchorages and marinas.

I think the biggest problem you might have is that the winds in August can be very light.

Good luck.

Give yourself time. You don't want to be stressed to be back for work or something. Count on things you never in you wildest dreams could ever imagine to happen.

We just bought her. I have never sailed a boat before. I have been on a few but never sailed them. The po said he will sail her with me this spring and I have classes starting in March. I am looking forward to getting good at it and feel I have the right size boat to learn on.

We have a 27 almost same vintage still in our family, it is what we all learned on and they are such sweet boats. You will have a ball learning on a 27, but it takes time... you don't know what you don't know until you know something!! Then it is very obvious what you need to know better! Have fun!

I too just purchased a C27 in June and this is my first boat as well, unless you consider a season sailing on my Sunfish experience. I hired a local captian to teach me the basic keelboat instruction and plan on getting the certification as well. The previous owner was also kind enough to spend and afternoon teaching me to dock, as this is a tiller controlled boat with lots of prop walk to port. After one lesson I pretty much have the hang of sailing the boat, although I probably am not getting the maximum performance of the sails yet, but I am still learning. Sailing on Lake Erie is great but the wind has not been so cooperative in July. By now I am sure you have found out how easy and responsive the C27 is, what a great boat.
