Sailing while its 45 degrees outside and winds gusting to 30mph makes it a very interesting ride. A few buddies came home for the Turkey holiday and decided it would be a good idea to go for a sail yesterday. With 4 guys it only took about 30mins to setup and splash. It was worth every minute of that 2hr sail.

You've got to really love it George! :D I just noticed something. Your boat is a 1986 O'Day 222 #686 and mine is a 1986 O'Day 222 #652. Yours is newer than mine.

Thanks Joe, I was afraid of either the rigging snapping on me or maybe the main sail blowing out. I also put the centerboard back temporarily with window caulking because I didn't get my bottom paint yet to put a few coats. I plan on taking it apart again once the paint comes in. All in all it was very worth taking it out for a few hours. Had a blast.

The funniest thing was with all four of us weighing an average 200lbs the boat didn't even heal that bad it was sliding sideways on the water on a close haul and experienced some serious weather helm. On a broad reach or downwind we hit 12.4mph max with just the main. I didn't bother setting up the jib. Plus I didn't want to risk to breaking it as I expected the rigging or main to blow up.

The mainsail was so over taxed that we commented on how it was almost looking like a parachute. Probably didn't help that we didn't connect the boom vang. I could see the light coming from the seams of the mainsail as well.

If your familiar to Facebook I have a few more pictures in my Oday album:

It's good that you had enough ballast with you on a windy day like that. The only thing that you need to avoid is letting the Mainsail rub up against the spreaders without the boom vang set. I tore my Mainsail a couple of years ago doing that. All it takes is one of the batten pockets getting caught on the spreader with the boom jumping up and down.

I went on Facebook and saw the pics George. The boat looks great! Hopefully, spring will be here before you know it and you'll be right back out there again.
Ahoy!
Joe

Thanks Joe, I got a ton of projects to do this winter and to think when new rigging and main will do for its sailing ability. Spring can't come any sooner.
