"All you need now is a good product and a reliable supply source."....

and unless it is a business you can run/manage/grow by YOURSELF....you will need honest, reliable and knowledgeable employees....else the best product and the source don't matter

And this lack of capable and willing help is something that is totally absent in today's economy, and has been brewing at least since the 90's. People want to be able to do their thing on the employers nickel, show up, leave and come and go as they please, steal/use/borrow what they want from the employer and still get paid full wages and benefits for full time hours that they "work"
I have talked to the owners of landscaping businesses and asked why all of their hired help was Hispanic. The response is always the same I pay 15 dollar per hour with benefits and no white men or women apply for the jobs.

In the candy shop I asked one woman how long she had been working there and she said 60 years she thought. When I asked how much longer she replied that as long as the doctors keep putting her back together she would keep working.

that article smacks of left wing 'journalism' stereotyping 'evil republicans'.

Hatchet job.
Take care lest you use too broad a brush. I believe that every American business man and woman is trying to do the best for their community as they can from their point of view. Ms. Bean is trying to make the best of the economy of coastal Maine and the reporter is trying to tell the story as he sees and interprets it. I don't think it fair to paint one all wrong and another all right. Unless you have been in business it is not possible that you know and understand the extraordinary complexity of the decisions that must be made on both a daily and also on a long term basis.
The conditions that are completely acceptable in a lobster house that has sold to the public for forty years and served on the same tables won't be accepted in a similar establishment that has just opened next door. Here I am not speaking about the health department but rather about the public perception of what a "new" shop should look like.
You mustn't make it too "nice' and you mustn't make it too rustic.

If the class of 2012 at the Harvard Business School came to any town in Maine and studied how it worked and remained a viable economic entity they would probably recommend the changes that Ms Bean is working. At the same time they would have to acknowledge that for some arcane reason it also works as it is.

Change is sometimes not easy to accept. I am a new comer in our county. I bought our house in 1971 and we were the 3rd house from the end of the road. I used to sit on my back porch and shoot tin cans with a .22 rifle with no fear of offending my neighbors. Today there are 500 houses where there once were fields and woods where my children played. People have to live somewhere.
My best friend lives on a farm that has been in his family for more than 200 years. The house was built in the late 1700's. Many of those farms are now housing projects.

Change happens by several mechanisms just like childbirth some are more painful than others.

the reason I called it a left wing hatchet job is readily apparent at the opening of the 'story'. What is the point of mentioning positions on gay rights & abortion and the fact that she is a major player in the republican party? That has nothing to do with the lobster industry in Maine. Did I miss a Harvard study on the habits of gay lobsters suffering the trauma of abortion?

The one quote I heard from an old lobsterman, " If you want to become a millionaire lobsterman, start off as a multi-millionaire".

Gettinthere/Maine.. I think I saw an article from BP that said all the lobsters in the Gulf of Mexico, regardless of their "orientations" would be fine to eat!

We spent a night in Tennants harbor last August. We picked up a mooring from Cod End. Went ashore and ordered a lobster feast. 2 lb lobsters were 7 bucks a pound. Best Lobster we ever had. It was a beautiful place to spent the evening. There seemed to be quite a bit of commercial lobster activity.

This story seems to be slanted. Kind of like a knee jerk reaction against big box stores. I like the big box store prices, but I miss the service and local convenience of the mom and pop stores too.

All is fair in love and war and I guess capitalism too....

An aside about Canadian lobstering and the prices they get, since it was slipped into the mix above: We had Canadian lobster for New Year's dinner last year. We paid about 6 Euros per kilo for crustaceans that had been airfreighted to the market in Barcelona, Spain. Lobster trucked to our local Stop & Shop costs more than that.

Your point? Does Ms. Bean own BP too? She's taking over the world!! She must be stopped!!!

We need more hysteria to sell more newspapers. Get on board!

Laughing .. I was cracking wise because the BP plan for oil containment had reference to lobsters (as reported by natnl news media) .. and of course there are none in the Gulf.. Yeah we had plenty hysteria down here to last for a while !

Oh MaineSail, it distresses me to see you say anything complimentary about that woman. I've experienced enough of her shenanigans in both the business and political arenas to say with absolute certainty that I will do all I can to boycott her business, and I urge others to do the same. This same article got posted of Facebook and employees of the larger family business (not her Perfect Maine business, but the other one she inherited a piece of) are afraid to say anything about her for fear of reprisal. This, even though she has essentially been all but driven out of that family business.

You are right, one has nothing to do with another. EXCEPT for people who like to put their dollars toward people and businesses with whom they share certain views. One of the reasons I will strive not to patronize this woman's businesses is her right-wing nut-job political views. I'd elaborate but it is probably best that I don't.

I can say this now because I no longer work for the family business. I was an unenrolled voter until she ran for Congress. Having heard from numerous sources about her boardroom behavior w/r/t things like how to treat the businesses' hard-working employees, I enrolled as a Republican so I could vote against her in two primary elections.

MaineSail, you talk of the family business success and its philanthropy. I could not agree with you more. But keep in mind that her role in that business, last I heard anyway, was limited to a seat on the Board that she got by virtue of birth. Neither she nor either of her sons went very far in that business. And you might note that said business has done backflips to disassociate itself from her on numerous occasions, particularly during her forays into politics. Linda Bean and L.L. Bean are two distinct and separate entities.

Edited to add: This summer, we spent some time talking to some locals in her town. Most everyone there either fears her, or hates her, or both. So don't try to convince anyone that she is saving the community because she ain't.
