Dan Obama,

You will get along fine with Keith. I am not a Marxist and have words for those how would destroy America.

As to your leak, is the water pooling there? Is it obviously entering there?

Is there also water in bilge?

Remove starboard cushions and hatch. Use flashlight and reach around to feel under sink is that area wet?

What I am saying is that an accurate source of leak would be helpful for us to offer advice.

If water is just pooling behind that small barrier in bilge it may not be coming from where you think it is coming from. Whole lot of other place allow water to get into bilge, that is what bilge is for, collecting water from all over.

So, give us more information.

The most likely leak on that boat is at the chainplates, Then it runs aft along the channel formed by the plastic shell roof that I call the overhead liner, then drips along the inside hull of the boat just aft of the rear bulkhead on the starboard side, or just aft of the quarter birth on the port side.

Look inside your hold, just aft of the gangway, where the pipe enters, is there water standing there. if so it seeps through the little bit of bilge that is under that small locker with the wooden lid under your gangway steps, then into the bilge where you are seeing it.

Another likely place for water to get in are your ports. both the opening, and the salon fixed ports. again notice how the water can run along that channel in your overhead liner, down the hull, and to the bilge.

bottom line is that, unless you KNOW that your through deck fixtures have been removed and reseated within the past few years, then it is time to go over each and everyone carefully and use a garden hose to be sure that your sure it doesn't leak. Also spend some time in the boat during rainstorms. it will take a while to track down and fix your leaks but it is worth it, and you learn a ton about your boat in the process. In this way you begin to make her your boat!

The really sad thing about Ed and alot of folks like him, in fact, the vast majority of our fellow citizens, is that he has failed to realize that there is not one bit of difference in the crooks who call themselves republicans, and the crooks who call themselves democrates. hey guys, its all just a big show, It is just like the old scam where two guys fake a fight in a crowd so that while everyone is distracted watching the fight they get their pockets picked. Has you pocket been picked lately? Gotten hurt by the recent downturn while the politicians and bankers and ceos have made a killing? Have you noticed how your rights have been eroded by both parties? Ever been searched at an airport lately?. Been held without due process? Had your boat searched? Been told who you cant" marry, what you can"t smoke?. have to wear your seatbelt, helmet, Paid income taxes? Told who you can hire, who you can't?. told where you will send you kids to school, when and for how long. what they will hear when they get there? told what countries you can't visit? had your property confiscated for a comunity development? etc. etc

I very wise man, said, "you shall know them by their fruit"...well look around folks, we are head over heels in debt with crumbling bridges and near bankrupt and in washington it is business as usual. and it has been for decades under both parties. But you guys just keep watching the fight!

Keith,

You missed the most obvious - top hatch not fully extended over companionway hatch.

I guess it is now demostrated that some involved in the medical field also delve into the legalization of pot. That position is typical of Libertarians. Maybe Keith needs to take the winter and read. Keith needs to report on
http://mises.org/ and especially http://www.iea.org.uk/files/upld-publication43pdf

So, are you taking your boat to the Gulf Coast?

Do you have an intake hose for a bilge pump in the bilge? I had water seeping back through my manual pump when it rained and the handle was in the up position.

Not sure how well your eyes are.. But sometimes you really need to look closely for small cracks in the hull, especially if the boat has bottom paint on it.. Sometimes these fractures are hairline and you really need to get on your back under the boat ( boat on the hard ) and ferret them out with a strong flashlight and in some cases a magnifying glass.. Thankyou for your service.

My O'Day 26 was a project boat. Bought it from a guy who got transferred/took job in California from southeast. Had not been able to come back to boat in three years. Only then because it was damaged by wake caused by cigarette boats racing in front of dock.

I first took to a rented garage and did some big time bottom work and other work that was best done indoors. Used boat life caulking and installed new front hatch.

When I took to lake, after first rain, it leaked in many places. The Boat Life Caulking did not work.

For the front hatch, I took back out and reinstalled using butyl tape sealant. This stuff can be used for any on deck sealing issue such as hardware.

Then I went around and resealed the leaking hardward with NP-1 roofing sealant.

I still need to take off rub rail and reseal all retaining screws, but today leaking in neglible.

One day when heavy rain forcast, I went and sat in boat and crawled in under cockpit, etc. I was able to track down small leaks this way. If you do not fit, you need to get someone who can crawl around and in with flashlight to do this. This method is often used with hose spraying water on suspect places. However, some leaks take an hour or so to be identified so a heavy constant rainy day works best.

Others have pointed out places to look. Take all advice offered and make list. Take out rubber cosmetic plugs so you can reach inside and look inside of hull areas and cabin liner. Liner has lip which others have discribed that takes water from where it leaks and transports to other places such as aft to run into bilge.

Such leaks are common in older boats. Owners have to be dectives and find sources. Usually there are more than one source.

If water is coming from where keel attaches to bilge, then a couple of years ago there was extensive discussion on that very subject. Water often migrates thru layers of FRP in boats. Finding source is sometimes challenge. The on your back with the magnifying glass method has already been discribed.

However, I would eliminate all other sources first, as described above and in other replies to your post. Also, learn to search archieves. Also, Rich and Keith have replied already. Post pictures for them to comment on. Keith will comment notwithstanding his politics. He is still young and needs to read history about the failures of socialism and dictators such as his idol Obama.

Again, try water from outside test and send pictures. Small digital cameras can be had cheap.

Dan,
I would check the self bailing hose under the lazarett. Also, the lower gudgeon on the transom. It you see water marks near the backup plate on the fiberglass that will be a good indication. If it's rain water, it could be coming in from under the gunwales. I found out one thing the hard way years ago; some cleaners including hull cleaners have Oxalic Acid which will eat out caulking. I wouldn't go removing lifeline stanchions unless you knew for sure that they are leaking. If you've never caulked under your gunwale strip, now is a good time to do it. This is the most likely place for water seepage. Years ago my gunwales were leaking like a sieve and I removed one side of the boat at a time. I cleaned it and caulked it and put it back together. Then I did the same to the other side of the boat. It's a lot easier this way than to take them completely off the boat. My gunwales are Aluminum so I used a Polysulfide caulking. If your gunwales are vinyl, you should use something else like Dow Corning 795 and that goes for plastic hatches and deck plates. Like Ed says, you need to do a little investigating. Run your hand along the head liner on a rainy day to feel for moisture, check for water marks, and visually look for the moisture.
I installed a Beckson Deck plate in the center of my inner transom. That allowed me to remove my two gudgions and re-caulk them. I didn't need any help at all. It also enabled me to replace my self bailing hose.
This past summer I noticed a tiny drip on the Port side below the port light so I brought my boat home because of the hurricane warning and I removed part of the gunwale on that side and caulked over some screws. That took care of that leak. I also removed a Herreshoff cleat on my combing that was interfering with my Gennie sheets. I had installed it a few years ago for my CDI Furler control line. I glassed in the holes and will need to figure out what I want to use in place of this cleat and where I want to locate it.
Check out your public library for any of Don Casey's books and read up on this. There are certain steps that should be followed when caulking and they are all in his books. Good luck.

Good God Ed I am 50 years young, country raised, college educated, a retired military officer, history nut, voracious reader, political skeptic and I have three sons serving active duty military RIGHT NOW:, 1 (my son in law brent) currently on patrol and often under fire in afghanistan (101'st bravo), one (my oldest son taylor) a c-17 crew cheif ( in kuwaite, which by the way is the exit point for our war dead He is on the honor guard team which escorts our war dead to the aircraft, ,a somber and busy duty let me tell you my friend) and my baby boy (daniel) who is currently stateside in florida. He is an f 22 crew chief. So I think i know a little bit about current events. I am not a fan of any politician or politician wanna be, or these overpaid showmen they call news casters. I will leave the Andy Jackson alone, However, I am of Cherokee indian descent, i live a short bike ride from the Col Ridge House, and the seat of the cherokee capital, and I love the land of my birth (Appalachia). If you can't figure it out from that you don't care anyway, which is perfectly alright with me. i DO like 20 dollar bills.
my deepest regrets and apologies to those of you who just want to discuss the beauties of sailing. but i am not mature enough to ignore the bullies. That is more than enough to let you know who i am when it comes to current events......more than enough.....Sorry guys, from here on out, no more politics or commentary from me again, just sailing..

Is your puddle behind the rear bulkhead, or in front of the bulkhead under the floor board? I had some bad leaks around the gauges, and also from the drain for the little cooler in the starboard side of the cockpit. Also, don't forget that your cooler in the galley drains, strangely enough, into your bilge!!!!
I agree with ed, nothing beats spending a rain storm in the boat with a bright flashlight....except maybe spending a rainstorm in the boat with a bottle of bourbon and a flashlight. :D
