I see several models that share a Legend designation, and I think Hunter calls themselves Legend in Europe. What specifically made a Hunter boat a Legend model? Dan

Excellent question! And I hope you get the definitive answer. Our "Boat Info" is misleading I think. It has dates of '87 thru '90 for the H37 and '84-'90 for the H37.5. Can that be right? Basically it is the hull design after the Cherubinis. Look at pictures of the H26.5, the H40, the H40.5, the H37, and the H37.5. But the H40 did not have a walk-thru transom. I used to think it was just the ".5" boats but that is obviously incorrect. Of course in Europe all the boats are Legends, simply the manufacturers name.

Anthem is a 1985 Hunter 40

Early on I had heard of it referred to as a "Legend."

I bought Anthem from the original owner and have the original sales brochure for this particular model and nowhere is there any mention of the Legend model designation. I have the 1985 owners manual which covers the 20, 22, 27, 34, 37 and 40. There is no mention of Legend in it either.

I can't answer your question but apparently it's a designation on later models (in addition to the whole England thing.)

89-94 in the 35.5 models were "Legend" series boats. I think you're on to something with the ".5" designation. There were 28.5, 33.5, 35.5, 37.5, 40.5 models for sure, ALL called Legend series boats, mostly from 89-94 time frame, and in my opinion, some of the best boats Hunter ever built. Earlier model 33, 35, 37, and 40 were NOT "Legend" series. Where's Jim Bohart when you need him?

I have a scan of the original brochure for the Hunter 37 from 88 or 89 and it calls this boat a Legend 37 and references the Legend name in several places. My original question was to find out if the Legends were somehow different from the rest of the line, like the Visions are different in the style of rigging they use.

I know there are several models including the 35, 35.5, 37, 37.5 often referred to as Legends, but the only one on the Hunter website listed as a Legend is the 37. Having said that, they don't even refer to the 35 or the 35.5, perhaps because they don't have copies of the original brochures.

Still looking for an answer if anyone has one! Dan

Add the 30' 88-94 in the Legend series.

Mine is a 1988 Hunter Legend 37. It has "Legend" printed on the side near the aft end and the original owner's manual uses that term. I also have an original sales brochure for the same boat from 1987 (first year for this hull with winged keel) and it calls it a Legend. Only diff between 87 and 88 is slight change in setee on starboard side to remove a table section that broke the seating area and differnt painting on cabin top. I'm pretty sure thatthe 35's those years with winged keels were also Legends. I think the Legends tended to be lighter weight and slightly more performance oriented than some ofthe other (and earlier) models, but the bigger boats that emphasized luxury were identified as Passage models. The 37 legends like mine (before the B&R rig and step up to 37.5) are among the fastest (for their class/size) boats that Hunter ever made. In about 90 they changed interior configuration by changing from foe&aft mounted rear berth to cross-wise which I like less, but hull and rig remained same. the change to the 37.5 came next and it is not quite as speedy but does have some more "creature comfort" pluses. For me, the old 37 is perfect: A true Legend!

Because Hunter said so.

The Legend series started with the H'35, H'37 etc and appears to have continued through the ".5" series.

The boats after the Cherubini's were NOT Legend's except in the minds of us owners!

The Hunter B & R Rig was started with the boats in 1983 or so (31, 34 & 40).

Well Everybody, it appears that there is no particular reason they are called Legends other than a choice made by Hunter.
I understand the 35(.5) Legend was created for a racing series, could it have been the first of the series?

RE: Legend...

Let's not leave out our '87 thru '89 model years of the 35 Legend series!

Hi all, I too am a UK resident with a 2004 'Legend' 36. Everything said so far about differentiation from the British Hunter boat manufacturer is correct. Also worth noting that Hunter had a manufacturing facility in Portland, Dorset (UK) and all boats which emerged from this factory (like mine) carried the 'Legend' designation. Sadly this factory closed a few short years ago, and even though the ones we get here are manufactured by Luhrs in Alachua Fl, they still are marketed as 'Legend' in UK

I was always led to believe that because there was already an established but quite separate boat making firm called "Hunter" already operating here in the UK, the USA based firm called "Hunter" marketed their boats in the UK as "Hunter Legends" to avoid a law suit and confusion over here in the UK.

Best wishes,

Dr. Iain Jennings owner of a Hunter (Legend ) 26
called "Eisbar"

PS I am looking to get in touch with other people in hte UK who own and sail Hunter 26's
