After about a month of waiting for a decision on my broken mast the insurance company has agreed to pay for a new one and installation. The interesting thing is that I am going to end up with just about all new rigging. Apparently over the years the positioning of the rigging on the mast has changed consequently the lengths have changed. The new mast is coming from the company that made the original. When I posted this originally someone had said the new mast does not need to be tapered like the old mast. That was correct. Only problem with the entire scenario is I am going to get it back just in time to cover it for the winter. I am not complaining I am just glad the boat did not get totaled.

I have a feeling the manufacturer would refuse to warranty a new mast if the rigging is not replaced at the same time.

Would you mind sharing the cause?

Tapered spars are overkill on a small boat. The only reason for a tapered spar is to reduce windage and weight aloft; and on a boat under about 35 ft you have more windage from big heavy guys sitting in the cockpit and as far as weight goes, those guys will easily offset the extra 2 or 3 lbs aloft from the non-tapered spar. And a non-tapered spar is significantly cheaper.

For a small boat I would rather mind the collection of fittings at the masthead and ensure that my spinnaker halyard was not overly heavy.

I am glad your boat is good to go again, winter or not. But you would have waited much longer, and paid much more, for a tapered spar being made for a boat out of production!

Not sure, either I hooked a very small branch at the end of the tree on the boat ramp or one of the spreader brackets let go. SOrry I can not figure how to reply any other way. I might have been moving 1/4 mile an hour. What was weird I heard absolutely nothing when it happened.

According to what I could find they say it was not that big of a deal. Granted I am a novice. THe mast is being made by the original manufacture. All I know is that ordered it is very trustworthy and very reputable. So I am relying on them to make it correct. The manufacture is doing all of the fitting. It was cheaper for them than the marina. It will all be new when it is finished. That is if it ever gets finished this Marina if filling up fast with work. I really need to find a reliable and sure way to raise and lower the mast. At this point I do not have to raise it as it stays up and on the trailer. It only moves 500 ft. to the water.

Wouldn't you want it tapered?

I will need to see what is going on with it. Not sure, was told they had to put new on but to what extent I am not sure. If I can get my hands on it, I will let you know. It was all in good shape. I do know there was one small bend in I think the backstay but I was told it could be straightened as it did not have a tight kink but rather a gentle bend. I will try to get a picture, but the last time I say it it was all in bundles.

Well, I think I might get the boat back with the new mast as a THanksgiving present. The company is behind and has not made it yet and then it needs shipped. No ones fault, just my luck. I think I just need to get a real big pair of flippers and walk on water with sails hanging from my arms.
