Hey all, I have a ? about tranducers, my hull is made of solid hand layed fiberglass, reinforced by glassed wood stringers, approx 1-1/4" thick. Will a thru hull transducer work here? Red

You didn't mention if your transucer was a true thru hull or one that was mounted inside the hull?
Ultrasonic transmission is best through a single medium. When ever anything is added you lose some quality. If you have a foam cored hull you won't get through the several sound barriers. If you have a solid glass hull you will get along fine.
I often wonder if the transducer is mounted on the hull and is not perpendicular to the bottom does it sense the bottom off at angle from the boat?. If you shined a flash light slightly off to one side of where you were walking you wouldn't see the path but you might see the wall of the cliff face up or the edge of the narrow ledge you are walking.

I'm more interested in knowing how deep it is ahead of the boat than under it. I wonder if it could be mounted to angle ahead.

Ross just answered my ?, my hull is solid hand layed glass, I have not bought a new one as I wanted to be fairly sure it would shoot thru my hull composition. As far as aiming it forward, I think they reccomend up in front of or even wf the keel, its sonar that shoots a specific cone shape and has different accuracy levels, I think depending on the angle. They have different angle models so you shoot straight down...Red
The advantage that I find with the fish finders is that they allow you to see the contour and slope of the bottom. If I hve 8 feet under the stern I usually have about 8 feet under the bow. BUT not always I ran hard aground in the Wye River with 7 feet showing on my sounder at the stern. It wouldn't have helped if the transducer had been hanging from my anchor roller The bottom is just plain lumpy in places in that river.
