If you are going to use the above materials, why not Starboard? It seems like a lot less work, unless there is something wrong with the material?Fiberglass can be laid up into thick plates and cut to size. Locust, white oak, coffee tree, red mulberry, red cedar(virginia juniper) and black cherry wood is all very durable and easy to work with.
Starboard isn't a stable enough material to use as a backing plate. It will cold flow under pressure and loosen with time.If you are going to use the above materials, why not Starboard? It seems like a lot less work, unless there is something wrong with the material?

If you will do aluminum, check at a shop that makes duct work. Often they punch holes out of aluminum plate to make pluenum chambers.I will go with Stainless or Aluminum from one of the suggestions made. .
