I have just finisihed completely reconditioning my Isomat boom with internal reefing after 20 years. If anyone is undertakiang this project in the future, I would be glad to assist with technical and parts information. Best, Ron
Jim, I had the exact experience with shaking out a reef and we reefed our boat continously during extended cruises. It was especially annoying during night passages when everything seems more complicated and difficult. What I found after drilling out the pop rivets that held my end caps in place was 1.) There were numerous exposed machine screws/bolts internally that snagged the lines occasionally,2.) the sheaves in the blocks were frozen and distorted, and the blocks had considerable corrosion, 3.) the reefing lines were twisted when originally installed at commissioning and 4.) I found the rollers in the boom cap were worn and distorted, especially on the topping lift. If you have the time, you might want to make this a Winter project. To do it right is quite time consuming. If you attempt this, I will gladly help you avoid potential eroors/problems. Best, RonI have a Person 36-2 and think the internal sheeves are in need of replacing. It will reef fine, but shaking out the reef is a bear! Any info appreciated.

Hi Ron, I just purchase a 1989 34-2 this past Spring and would like to rework my reefing system this Winter. It seems to work awfully hard. I believe something might be caught up inside boom. Doesn`t seem to be enough sheeves for lines at end of boom near mast also. i would like to discuss with you more.Don BrownI have just finisihed completely reconditioning my Isomat boom with internal reefing after 20 years. Don, I would be glad to help you with anything you need. I would, however, suggest that you allow plenty of time to do the project. It is not difficult, but it is time consuming if you want to do a good job. Best, RonHi Ron, I just purchase a 1989 34-2 this past Spring and would like to rework my reefing system this Winter.
