Mariners are advised that ECDIS may not display some isolated shoal depths when operating in “BASE or STANDARD Display” mode. Route planning and monitoring alarms for these shoal depths may not always be activated. To ensure safe navigation and to confirm that a planned route is clear of such dangers, mariners should visually inspect the planned route using the ECDIS configured to display “ALL DATA”. The Mariner should not solely rely on the automated voyage planning check function. NOAA has updated the following ENC’s to resolve this issue.

That is pretty interesting.. Another reason to look over the paper before routing.. if not the real paper then the raster charts instead of the vector ones..
Reckon one of those is what Captn' Joseph Hazelwood may have been using ?? :~)

This warning is very appropriate as there are more and more incidents of ships running onto hazards which were not displayed at the scale the navigator was using.

Even small scale paper charts can have an isolated rock portrayed so small as to be unnoticeable when it is an area with a multiplicity of other pieces of information.
The moral is, "If you are going into areas where the navigation is complicated then make sure you are working on a sensible scaled chart". This applies to electronic and paper charting systems.
The problem is that people try to navigate using these tiny 12" screens which chartplotter makers seem to think are safe and is the reason why I use a decent sized laptop.

I was once working on a project that had me sitting in a room shooting the breeze with several tanker captains, all of whom knew Hazelwood well and operated ships of the same class. This was shortly after the accident so it was still a big topic of conversation.

They all agreed that Hazelwood was a first class mariner and that any one of them could have ended up in his shoes. The discussion is best summed up by a statement along the lines of, "Geeze, you would think you could point a licensed first mate you had sailed with for years straight down a fairway towards the open sea in a channel he had sailed many times and go to your cabin without his deciding to make a 90 degree turn for reasons that he still can't quite explain."
