Just recently acquired an '85 Catalina 27 needing much TLC. Batteries need to be replaced but under the existing units there is (was - now disintegrated!) a wooden shelf covering both molded bases on the hull. Can anyone tell me if the wood is original equipment, or should the batteries sit right on top of the hull? Also I assume a couple of battery boxes would be good to contain any possible leakage in future?

I have a 84 model and have the batteries inside under the port settee but it seems like a lot, if not most, are mounted out under the cockpit storage rack that you describe. There are definite pros and cons here, but inside you don't worry about water damage, and yes, battery boxes are always required. If you relocate the batteries inside, the place where they are now is great for storing oil, antifreeze, cleaning supplies, etc.

Thanks for that info and the idea. I guess moving the batteries inside would move the weight closer to the center of the boat and it would still be low. As we plan any other changes I may do that. As far as the wooden rack was concerned, it was in so many pieces I never thought of it being above the batteries.
