Are backstays really necessary?

Sorry to hear that, Scott .. Glad no one was hurt and the rig was not lost.. Couldn't ya just put the splitter plate higher up the main part of the backstay to get the wires into a better place?

I could, but it wouldn't be that much better unless I just ran two backstays all the way up. I haven't researched anything about a backstay spreader. Hopefully I can find a good alternative to what I had. I can't say have, cause it aint there any more.:)

I have a Catalina Capri 16 with swept back side stays, no backstay. It sails great on all points, just the main and standard jib. Don't have spinnaker or genoas yet but working on them soon. Only problem I have with no back stay is I don't have a ready place to hook up the boom when I lower the main. Lowering the boom takes on a whole new meaning, LOL! Bam, ouch! Hey!!! LOL!

that's a way different boat than scott's masthead rigged cat 30; to support the boom, install a topping lift, or get a rigid vang. Use the mainsheet clipped to the end of the boom for support when not sailing.
