Cutlass, cutless? Whatever...

Step one! Pull rudder (see other thread :) )

Find the setscrews through the 3" of bottom paint, remove 2.9" of bottom paint helps (why did he paint the strut? Dunno...)

Cut the inside, I used a reciprocating saw CAREFULLY. Better to use a hacksaw if you don't have a recip saw or are ham fisted and like to hack everything. Then peel it inside all the way through, if it's hard, cut it a little more. Then just grab it with vice grips and it comes right out

lightly sand the inside, mine was pretty clean...

Then take a blowtorch and melt all the snow around the boat, better do the whole yard...

coat the bearing and the inside of the strut with dishwashing liquid, assemble the threaded rod (yes, 3/4" rod is overkill, It's what I have, left over from another project) coat the nut and washer with more soap, and tighten carefully making sure it goes in straight

Then cut this part off, I used a oscillating saw (harbor freight $39 special) and clean up the edges

Exactly, just as I remember. Except I borrowed the press from the company that made my new shaft. Good feeling isn't it? But you had to buy a bearing that was too long? I thought they made them in all the lengths.

You could have pressed out the bearing without removing the shaft and rudder.

I could have, but it's a lot harder for one, and two, I had to pull the shaft and rudder anyway.

I could not find one the right length, apparently it does not exist. Some research showed you have to cut them.

cutlass bearing replacement

I now use a 4 inch cutlass bearing centered in my 3 inch strut.
Seems to work even better than its predecessor which was cut
down to 3 inches.

Hi I also have a cutless bearing problem. I think I found it in time (shaft not grooved out) But my question is on this site they show replacement part # 200306 1" x 1 1/2" x 4" (betty 34309) -its non metallic that is what I have not brass. the shaft is aprox. 1"
will this part be the correct one? My boat is a 1980 Hunter 27
Best Regards- David B

Someone will know for certain but that sounds wrong. From this thread it appears that you can not get the right length of 3". But pretty sure the OD(diameter) is 1 1/4". Most likely this one: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|311|53222|292328&id=1233119 . It is the one that I use on my H37C.

For you folks that need it to be 3" in length what do you think of centering and leaving 1/2" exposed on each end?

thanks is 1 1/4 diameter and I ordered the "back"
Now the real trick to make sure I have the shaft aligned correct do I loosen
the motor mounts ? Anything to worry about in stuffing box?
