Well, after considerable waleing and knashing of teeth, I got inside the boat and like many of you predicted, it wasn't as bad as I had been having mental pictures of.

It was a small mess, with a small amount of water in the well. Lots of stuff that I was hoping for, but not really expecting to find. ie. stove, ice box, porta potty, cushions, life vests, rudder, jib, No Main Sail, drat it all.

It is a sickly 70's yellow interior. Oh' what a disgusting color.

I would have been happy to find that as a starting point. I like the layout. Why in the 70s did they think yellow would be enhanced with just a shade of lime green?

Isn't that the most sickly shade of yellow you have ever seen? I wonder if I can paint it. A nice white, would be good...

Yeah, that yellow is pretty bad but yes you can paint it. Check out Dura White Interior paint by Pettit. It requires no sanding and adheres well to glossy surfaces. No prep work other than removing any wax, grease or dirt from the surface. It comes in a variety of colors..... white, white and also white. The bad news is it is about $40 a quart and they recommend two coats. There are other paints but most will require a bonding primer and some sanding. First measure roughly the surface to be painted in square feet and then compare products, prices and quantities needed. Try to get a paint that may resist mildew. Years ago painted the interior of a boat white and the sense of brightness and cleanliness was well worth the effort. I used non texture roller and the finished product looked like it had been sprayed on. Good luck with the boat it looks in good shape. You have some work and expenses ahead so plan and budget for the project.

Re: pics 18 and 19......what's up with the cockpit floor... why is it so high? The portlight for the pilot berth is half covered. There's no place to sit properly in the cockpit.

Yep, that is Ice and Snow go back and check out pic 75 that really shows the ice and snow.

We have been having rain all night and I took the tarp off yesterday, the ice should be going out today. I have to get over there and get the life jacket that is covering the cockpit drain up and out of the ice. Tried to do it yesterday, but couldn't get it free.

This spring has just been sooooo much fun...

I have always hated spring. This one just reinforces that view.

Juno, the main might be in with the jib in that bag, have you pulled it out yet?

Hi Dave, The fabric was a pair of life jackets. I finally got the ice out of the cockpit today.



As soon as I got the life jackets off the drain, the drain began to work. I still had over 8" of ice. I chopped through it with an Ice Pick. What fun.

I still have water in the interior well, and an owner of a couple of American 26's like mine tells me there is a bilge pump down below the interior sole and batteries underneath the Ice Box. I am assuming that the batteries are dead, I haven't gone looking for the bilge pump acces panel. Suppose to be under the first step inside the cabin. Will check this weekend. Want to get all the extra weight off the boat and then get her in to start to fix the two small fiberglass gouges on the keel and then paint the bottom. While that is going on, the guy who is letting me use his hoist will be installing brakes on the trailer and the actuator into my Pickum UP.

Maybe with all the extra water and ice weight it woun't be a white knuckle tow the next time.

I would highly recommend adding a full bridgedeck to your boat. It will help prevent water from entering the cabin, and is a relatively easy project to do on most boats.

Is this what you are talking about? This is my boats big sister.



I have wondered about adding this extra cockpit area. For two reasons, I like the look and I am too tall for the boat as is.

Let me know if I understand what you mean, better yet use a picture to illustrate.

Hey, Sum...

I had thought about going electric. I don't really know the reason for going one way or another. I realize vehicles are hydraulic. How do you go about making a trailer hydraulic and work with the truck?

I am sure you know the answer. Please let me know, I am not committed one way or the other yet. (I thing SWAMBO would like to have me committed some days when I get going on this kind of thing). I keep earning Nursing Home Points every once and awhile. Lately, they have been awful easy to get. HAHAHA...

Sailingdog, What purpose does the bridge deck provide? Guess, I have never heard or seen one before. Not that I have seen or read about a lot of boats.

Basically, the bridgedeck in the cockpit of the boat is designed to prevent water entering the cabin from the cockpit. If you get pooped or a wave breaks over the boat, the bridgedeck prevents most or all of the water from downflooding into the cabin, and gives the cockpit a chance to drain properly. In the case of my boat it also reduces the volume and weight of water that can sit in the cockpit by FIVE cubic feet or 320 lbs. or so.

this is a photo of the original cockpit of my boat....



As you can see, there was only a short lip, about 3" high as the boat is built by the manufacturer. The reason I added the bridgedeck to my boat was that a majority of the water that entered the cockpit ended up below...
