I am mounting a 4 strok 9.9 suzuki outboard (abouat 100 lbs) to my O'day 28. I notice that the transom of the boat is very thing, I will say the thinner than two quaters on top of each other. I am affraid that a backing plate wont be enought to hold the engine in place. Does anyone have a better recomendation?

My Chrysler 22 has the same type of transom.....
The area where the mount was attached was beefed up with a fiberglass pad about 3/4" thick. Then the mount was attached with 1/4" thru bolts. I am not sure, but I think the pad was made by glassing in about a 5/8" piece of plywood about 12" square.
I still had to put a backing plate on last season because the weashers and nuts were starting to pull through the pad and I use an 8hp 4-stroke Yamaha that weighs 118 pounds.
I don't think it's a good idea to trust that transom to carry a motor without being beefed up.

Sorry I don't have a picture, but on my Hunter 23, the motor mount has been beefed up in a pretty simple, yet strong mathod.
1: big sheet of 3/4 marine ply through bolted on with the motor bracket
2: 2 foot long piece of 2x4 expoxied to the bilge floor. There are two carriage bolts going through this piece of wood (one near the transom, one at the other end), with threads sticking up.
3: Two angle aluminum braces, going to the lower and upper mounting bolts for the motor mount.
This thing's never moving.

Remember you are not only building for the heavy motor, but for the torque(twist) downward that is exceptionally strong with a 4 stroke. Your prop will affect this load on the transom. BEEF IT! Regards, Cap'n Red.
