Bugs

Anchor lights at deck level attract bugs. Many of these bugs are hazardous to humans spreading all kinds of horrible diseases. Putting a light at the end of the boom will guarantee putting all kinds of screens in your hatches and companionway crawling inside and hiding from the critters. maybe some pet bats will help? A separately powered anchor light can be hoisted up a halyard to near masthead to keep the light and bugs away from the deck.

Bugs? What BUGS? in nearly a hundred nights anchored on the rivers of the Chesapeake Bay with a lantern hung from the back stay We have not been troubled by nocturnal insects flies in the daytime but no bugs at night.

Anchor Down, Those are the words I used a few years ago when a young DNR officer disturbed my peace and tranquility and asked if that (indicating my anchor light) was a lantern. I said it was and he asked if I had a masthead light. I told him, no! He suggested that I should have a mast head light so I quoted USCG rule number 30. He said , "well alright . I'll let it go this time." and then he went away and I haven't been bothered since.

If you read the codes behind the codes and the details behind the COLREGS, in the CFR, in part 84.17 Horizontal Sectors sub paragraph B it says:

"(b) All-round lights shall be so located as not to be obscured by masts, topmasts or structures within angular sectors of more than 6 degrees, except anchor lights prescribed in Rule 30, which need not be placed at an impracticable height above the hull, and the all-round white light described in Rule 23(d), which may not be obscured at all."


This to me sounds like most all round lights must be able to display a horizontal beam of 354 degrees minimum EXCEPT for anchor lights prescribe in Rule 30....

Most all rounds can't be obscured by masts etc. by any more than 6 degrees. 360 degrees minus 6 degrees = 354 degrees of minimum horizontal light. The key words though are EXCEPT ANCHOR LIGHTS IN RULE 30.;)

Only the all round in 23 (d) can not be obstructed at all and rule 23 sub paragraph (d) is for power boats on the Great Lakes and does not apply to sailboats at anchor.

That's the way I read it at least...


Personally I have two anchor lights one at the mast head and one on my radar pole both are LED one is USCG certified/compliant and one is not technically USCG certified.

In your archives, Mainesail, do you have a reference as to when the coast guard approved oil lights for anchor lights? I have seen it somewhere but it has been lost in the madness of life.

§ 84.15 Intensity of lights (LINK)

(a) The minimum luminous intensity of lights shall be calculated by using the formula:

To say the least I think you might be hard pressed to find a non-electric light that would meet the above criteria. Of course they use that muddy federal gobbledygook language "so far as practicable" which would be left up to lawyers to determine how close to you were to "practicable" after being run down by the drunk in the Scarab..;)

Anchor light: It's required by law.
Not exactly: it's not required in a "designated anchorage" (can't remember the exact wording right now). So in a place like Silva Bay, I don't believe an anchor light is required.

I do usually hang a kerosene lamp off the boom. The cheapy $5 ones work amazingly well - they're still lit the morning after a fairly breezy night. And their orange/yellow glow is easy to pick out amid the sea of electric white ones.

Go to the link Mainesail posted and view the table of luminosities reqwuired for various distances. It doesn't copy and paste well.
As may be seen from the catalog page the lantern has more than enough output to meet the 2 mile requirement.

I think oil lights were around long enough before the Coasties were that they were great-great-great grandfathered in.

A few years ago I was crewing on a boat in the Keys when we anchored in Marathon's Boot Harbor. That night we noticed the many boats obviously using solar lanterns- like the garden variety. My skipper bought one ASAP. I beleive it was the Boat/US magazine during this winter that said the DNR passed out tickets recently due to non-Coast Guard approved anchor lights. Seems to me the only problem with the garden lights might be the distance requirement, but then again, I don't recall Boot Harbor is two miles long anyway.

While the addition of deck level lighting with solar-powered garden lights is probably a good idea...especially in crowded anchorages where idiot powerboaters don't look up high enough to see a masttop anchor light... you really need to have a USCG certified anchor light on during the night.

One of the reasons this didn't make sense is that in copy and paste we lose exponents. the formula above should read ; I equals 3.43 times ten to the sixth power times t (which is 10 to the negative seven) times
D squared times the D root of K.
Can this be fixed?
