FWIW, I tried to attach a "how to" file on my installation of a windlass on my Catalina 28 but it's too big/wrong format. Installation should apply to any similar boat. Works great! Anyone interested can find it under Catalina 28 Windlass Installation.doc @ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/catalina28/files/

Hi
I am looking for advise re a catalina 320 with a maxwell 500 windless with a rope gipsy. Is this an adequate windless for this boat? Do we keep it and fit a chain gipsy or do we replace it with a different windless?

This is a southern CA boat mostly anchoring over hard sand @40-80' depth.

All comments welcome.

Steve, I also have a Maxwell 500 on my Catalina 310, with the plain rope gipsy. Since my anchor rode is 100' chain, and 100' rope, I've never been able to use it, so I don't know how adequate it is. I thought I'd just change the gipsy to a combination type, so I contacted Maxwell. At the time, they had only one conversion kit available, and that was last year. I didn't buy it because they wanted $900 for it, and I figured I could get a new or used windlass for that price.
If you find a suitable substitute, could you post it? Thanks.

Steve, not sure what you mean by "adequate." I assume you know that you should use your engine to motor the boat over the anchor and never use the windlass to do that. Chain locks or cleats for rode allow you to break out the anchor.

So, the answer is what kind of rode do YOU use and how heavy is it, related to the windlass. Also, anchoring in 40 to 80 feet? Channel Islands and Catalina???
