Furler deck hole cover

I still use my Hood 810 below deck furler on my 30T. I'm having a lot of trouble with wasps (not mud daubers) building nests inside the anchor locker. The large round hole in the deck for the furler is a major passageway for the wasps. Has anyone come up with a clever way to close up this hole? It would be nice to be able to leave one on full time, but I'm okay with removing before sailing. Is foam my only option?

That would be ideal, but I didn't think these come big enough. I didn't measure, but the hole has to be 6-8' in diameter.

I use Spectracide Pro Wasp and Hornet killer. They drop dead in seconds and it's supposed to leave a lingering residue

I use dryer softener sheets to keep wasps from nesting in my mailbox. Try putting a couple sheets in a breathable box to repel them. One sheet in my mailbox lasts all summer. Apparently they don't like the chemical in the sheet.

cut the POOL NOODLE down the axis and wrap it around the 6 - 8 inch hole. secure it with fishing line.

Cut up a rubber mat and adhere it to the top of the furler or bottom of the opening. You can also tie your downhaul line closer to the vertical part of the furler to close things off a bit more. This idea is more work but will last longer than foam. Using a mat with foam might work even better.

I like @Rich Stidger 's idea for dryer sheets. I've always controlled wasps and spiders using moth balls in a tupperware. I then put the lid on before going sailing. Works like a charm. The active ingredient in mothballs also kills mold spores. But it does smell. You need to be able to air out the space before use.... I'll probably switch to dryer sheets though.

Seems not to matter. I've used various brands for many years. All sheets eliminated nesting.
