Pump fitting sealant

Do these style of fittings require any sealant? It looks like the other end of the nipple gets pressed against the pump outlet to form a seal so sealant would normally not be needed. I found one leaking below the waterline. I'm not terribly confident in it for this application

No sealant needed. If it is leaking, replace the O ring inside. It is for the fresh water system so below water line has nothing to do with it.

It makes me a bit more nervous. Thanks for the info. I didn't see an o-ring in there but I was working by flashlight

Ironically it wasn't leaking last year. I ordered a brand new fitting to ensure it's not missing anything
