With the Gobius C, is that hockey puck looking thing the only thing that attaches to the tank? No sensor stripe down the side? Does it do some kind of ultrasound to get the level?
Yes, the puck attaches to the top of the tank with VHB tape, no sensor stripes. The unit connects to the NMEA 2000 for power and sends data to the network. It can be read on a Chartplotter or display that can read the data. It also has BlueTooth LE, which is a low energy version of bluetooth. This version of BT has a very short transmission distance.
The unit is a micro radar. Similar to the Maretron sonic senders, but uses radio frequencies like an ordinary radar. Set up is pretty straightforward. It will ask for the dimensions of the holding tank and will calculate the volume and for odd shaped tanks it will also calculate the volume, level and percent of capacity. Pretty slick units.
One minor drawback to all NMEA 2000 sensors is data delay. The sensors send out data every 15(?) seconds, as opposed to analog sensors which are continuous.
