Dripless stuffing box vent tube location

I'm not sure I'd have the hose open to the air if the open end is somewhere water getting to this open end will drip or splash onto the engine or some other area where you don't want water. If you back down hard it is possible to force water into the bellows and seal and up the hose. I found this out the hard way when I noted corrosion around a particular area on my Yanmar right below the open hose. I installed the HyPoint vent and now have no such water intrusion.

In my original post, I posted a pic of a catchment I designed for this application. I'm guessing it has about half a liter of capacity.

Like a dummy, I fitted mine with a hose, with water pumped from the raw water outlet.... just because it's in the instructions.

My shaft log is 10 inches long and doesn't have a cutlass bearing (it's on a strut) so there's lots of water flow to cool the joint. I'll be removing all that at next haul out and fitting a plug.

The hose CANNOT be pulled to the side of the hull if installed, it must be centerline and at least 12 inches above the waterline. If you can't do that, plug it or use a different shaft seal. If installed with water injection, use the outlet side of the raw water vented loop.

The lazarette is about 1ft off center but, 18-24" higher than the galley cabinetry. I was able to see all the way to the lazarette bulkhead from the engine compartment today (where the fresh water pump is mounted). I feel very confident with this location and will likely route the vent hose there. If this is ever below the waterline, you'd better be bailing!
