Take some measurements of things like width from rail to rail at various spots before you start any disassembly. With my dhow once I started taking the rails off the hull wanted to fall open quite a bit. Straps helped hold it together, but it was good to have the measurements to know how tight to make them.

That book is great. Also the videos from Andy at Boatworks Today on his own YouTube channel and on the TotalBoat channel are very good for the fiberglass work.

Lay a piece of 1/4" ply or Luan over the top and trace the outline. You can use this as a jig later on if needed or just to get your measurements

Hope everyone is enjoying their 4th. Working away on the transom… she was water logged and wet with snails and all living in there.

I have a pattern for the back of the transom. Looks like I’ll have to cut out the brass drain as it’s wrapping water all the way to the bottom of the transom.

I have plywood attached to what’s remaining of the knees to help keep the outer transom from bowing out.

trying to leave about 3-4” of the inner transom to glass to when I lay new fiberglass on the inner transom

I have a plan… will see how much it changes along the way.

Opinion question… I’ve been trying to leave myself about 3-4” interior side of the transom to sand and built the inner transom. It would seem the inter transom was a single thing sheet.

Am I better off cut most of interior transom off. Maybe leaving only and inch to ensure that I get good surface prep for when I refit new plywood and then reglass?

looking for opinions. In the interim. I’m keep on working and removing material

It is a fielder’s choice. If it was me I would leave the sound part of the existing transom. There is no harm in having a solid corner to connect to. It will all blend when you do the reglass work. Your inclination is to use plywood. If you want a solid product that is lighter than plywood try coosa. It is a fiberglass composite product, stiff and would work well for this project. I think while just as strong it is lighter in weight.

The more I removed the more I found I needed to remove. Removed it all at the end of the day.
I had looked at coosa board. Was contemplating is it worth the cost. I will most likely go that route so I don’t have to do this again :)

Looks like the decision was made for you. Those are the easiest decisions!
Are you going to remove the knees prior to placing core material?

Undecided yet. I’ll need to temporarily remove screws to fit the board. Will see if it started to bow or lose shape.

I have to travel for a few days for work. When I get back. I’m going to go check out crosscut and maybe edensaw to see what material they have to replace the gunwale, skupper blocks and knees.

I have a car I’m restoring too so I need to figure out balancing time between both projects
