Travelers can be as simple as a piece of line anchored at the sides of the transom with the Mainsheet moving freely above the transom on a block or complex with a set of blocks , a track and infinite control of the mainsheet’s position.

What are you hoping to accomplish?

flat main in stiff wind, pocket in the main in light breezes. I could knot the fiddle block at the middle of a line going stern cleat to stern cleat but that's clumsy. Main obstacle is the rudder and tiller crossing over the stern. Somewhere out there there's a traveler with an at least approximately matching arc.

Makes no difference. I want what I want. It's a Compac 16. About a 2.5" coming with rudder higher and tiller crossing over. I think I'll resort to two small blocks as far outboard as possible, two jam cleats inboard a little, and a loop of line with both ends tied off to the fiddle block, if I can find a good way to bring the mainsheet from the fiddle block down to transom level.

For me racing entails frequent trim changes and tacks.

Cruising is more laid back. I don't need to make frequent trim changes and tight tacking duel maneuvers.

The gear can be different.

One can explore the benefits of an adjustable control on the transom by use of a tweeker attached to the boom end.

You can see in the picture of Puff, the tiller went under the transom deck. There are plenty of traveler configurations that arch over the tiller. There are travelers that consist of a steel bar with car. I personally like the way the Windmill handles the problem. It's a simple camblock on either side of the transom.

My Mariner uses a Crosby rigged sheet, like this:

Some people even attach travellers to the boom arch.

How are you currently setup for sheeting the boom?

Have you considered a vang to help flatten the sail?

Many thanks for the responses. I just bought the boat and haven't stepped the mast yet. The setup is (90% sure) what is illustrated above but I'd like to improve on it. On the 16 there is no step in the transom -- straight across -- and the tiller crosses over. A bridge as photographed would have to be about five inches tall. I'm compulsive for overkill -- belt and suspenders -- so an overkill attachment would be difficult but I suppose doable. I'm still thinking a loop of line, ends tied to a fiddle block, a couple of blocks far outboard on the transom, jam cleats inboard. A boom vang would be nice but I don't think there's a place to put one. There are only inches between the tabernacle and the opened hatch and only open cockpit behind the hatch. I'll have to take a look at that, though.

Drifting a little, I've seen several accounts about genoas overpowering Compac 23s when the winds come up. Anyone have experience to share about a 16? I only had a jib on the 16 I had in the 90s.
