I completely understand that Mark, and with a little more experience and confidence I might take the more direct route. I’m sure it would be the best way for you. I’m looking for the best way for me.
my original plan was to go north, several people suggested south insted. A 250 mile trip instead of a 350 mile trip.
Understand that almost all of my sailing has been in bays, on an 18’ 1500lb boat. I’m not quite adventurous enough to buy a new boat, and have my first sail be straight across Lake Huron. Maybe when I get to know the boat a bit better, trust myself a bit more …
My suggestion was to sail through the North Channel to Cockburn or Drummond Island, then cross over to Rogers City or Presque Isle and then harbor hop down to Tawas. All of this is day sailing with comfortable stops and lots to see and do. You can choose and wait for favorable weather easily, and supplies and repairs are readily available. And if anything happens that you need to leave the boat at a marina in MI, you are no more than an hour's drive from home. You could even leave the boat once you are in MI, go home, and continue hopping the boat down on weekends or your leisure.
My suggestion to do an overnight was only an option if you were pressed for time and just focused on getting the boat to Tawas.
What I didn't understand was your proposal to sail to Port Huron first. The sail there, and then to Tawas, has none of the above options. You will be more exposed, have fewer stopping points, the stops will have few supplies and repairs if needed, and you have less ability to pick and choose weather.
If that isn't enough, once down in Port Huron, you need to get up the St. Clair River, then up the Black River to any place that can take the boat. All of the easily accessed marinas are on the Canadian side. Or at least this was the case when I lived there - may be different now. Since you've lived there, I'm surprised you are not puckering a bit thinking about taking a new to you boat up the St. Clair during a shakedown. I just puckered a bit thinking about it.
As for distance, the trip through the North Channel and down the MI coast is the same distance as going South to Port Huron and around the thumb. Might actually be a bit shorter.
