I use both the Tiller Clutch or the tiller extension (does not attach to cockpit wall), depending on situation. Neither one by itself does everything, but one or the other covers 90%+ of my sailing.

The tiller clutch is great. If you can balance the sails the boat can track for some time. I had a Montgomery 15 that would sail for 30 minutes across the bay using the tiller clutch and balanced sails. I could change the tack a bit just by moving my weight around the cockpit.

The tether should be short enough to prevent going overboard. Neither getting dragged, or watching your boat sail away from you is a good answer - both have the same likely end result.

Yes I agree I want a tether as a safety item to keep me on the boat. It’s on my list with the appropriate vest.
