My goal is to display engine data from my 1999 Yanmar on my B&G Zeus chartplotter and I'm pretty confused about how to make this happen.
I'm reading Panbo about using a YDES-04 NMEA 2000 connector (from Yacht Devices) for older engines that use J1708 to carry J1587 logical data protocol. Honestly, I don't have any idea what this means, and I'm essentially looking for a plug and play solution. The YDES-4 is essentially a 2-pin connector that mates with a diagnostic connector on the engine. Panbo is writing about the gateway from an older Volvo-Penta engine and doesn't mention compatibility with a Yanmar.

But, I've also seen other devices, such as the PCM-09 engine gateway with a 6-pin connector. I saw that Yanmar sells displays that can be mounted at my instrument pod (and can connect with the chartplotter via NMEA 2000 connectivity), but I don't know if the Yanmar displays are useable with older model yanmar engines.

I suspect that these displays are only compatible with the engines listed as "related products" on their website.
If anybody has ever installed an engine instrument gateway to their chartplotter, I would love to see how it's done. I'm starting with the rat's nest of wires in the insturment pod ...

J1708 Engine Gateway YDES-04
Our J1708 to NMEA 2000 gateway for engines with a J1708 serial interface to a NMEA 2000 marine digital network. It supports the two protocols that work over J1708: the standard J1587 used by many manufacturers and the proprietary Volvo Penta protocol used in engines with EDC I, for example KAD...
