Trip to Europe (and back) begins

I almost hate to post this one. Two nights ago, there was quite the rough anchorage. We actually did shifts to make sure our anchor didn't drag or any other unhappy event to occur. We were in the middle of a group of boats, with one boat behind us towards shore. On my morning shift, that boat had broken it's mooring and gone to shore. They pulled it off the beach but didn't get far and the boat sunk. It must have holed the hull on the beach. This photo is now where it lies. A very sad day for the owner....

It will be a complete gut and rebuild job for sure at a minimum. The rudder was snapped off during the beach landing and the waves were pounding it into the beach, and area of mixed rock and sand. Not a good combination. It must have also holed the hull to have sunk so fast towing it off the beach.... Really sad...

@jssailem sent me a package of soft shackles before the trip. I've used them a lot. They are amazing! The more I use them, the more I find uses for them. I'm attaching a few photos of recent use.
This photo is in a marina in Portugal when a major storm came through, breaking the main docks and a lot of damage. I was able to secure my boat and the boat next to me along with the broken dock all in a large number of lines and inventive use of securing lines so they wouldn't chafe.
The first seriously good use came when we were setting up attachment points for being tethered in. The cock pit had limited options. We figured out a way of using one of the large shackles to go around this cleat with two other soft shackles inserted giving us three excellent attachment points in the cockpit for being tethered in.
Here is a soft shackle holding a low friction block just at the base of a pulpit post. I had to make the blocks, I used a drill as a lathe and turned them after making a makeshift turning gouge from a small screw driver. Then we carved the interior surfaces. It was pretty fun.
The end of my boom has a hole that is hard to fit anything through, but easy enough to push a soft shackle through. Now I can attach the preventer line right at the end of the boom! Awesome!
John, you want to make more soft shackles, I'd be delighted to have some more! Man are these things fantastic!!!!

Just as a note - I showed his soft shackles to some professional riggers and they were impressed saying they were the best finished soft shackles they'd seen!

Looking like tomorrow early afternoon. Looking at the prevailing winds here seems still a bit premature to head west. We are looking to make one more sail change and sit back and watch the sun, moon and stars while the boat sails to the Caribbean.
Can't tell you how much I love that Hydrovane wind vane! Set everything up and let the ship sail the wind!
