The spreader fix we did seems to be working well. We've been on both starboard and port tacks and everything is so far stable, knock on wood.

We are currently running pretty much down wind running only our foresail and making good speed. Apparent winds are in the 20's and we are showing boat speeds up over 10 knots surfing down the waves. We are probably somewhere in the 6 to 7 knot range average speed, perhaps a bit on the higher side.

We opted to follow the wind and have been skirting the bottom side of the low keeping our distance but tagging onto the winds. Waves are pretty good sized, I'd guess in the 10 foot range.

Another owner of my H430, described his day sailing, when he had to turn back to harbor in 24 foot seas :yikes:

He was Surfing on the Waves.

Our boats have the same theoretical hull speed of 8 knts , like yours.

His VMG = 12 knots

Why?

12 knots VMG is amazing!

I didn't want to exaggerate but when I'd said above 10 knots, there some surprising numbers I'd seen. I figured it was simply electronics errors, but maybe not....

I'm very pleased with the sailing performance of this boat. Almost 40 years old and still keeping up with the later designs. I can't wait to see what John and Jim show me for average cruising speed over the time we've been tracking it.

With the level of comfort this boat has with its sailing speed, sea worthiness, I don't think you find often such a nice compromise of that trio. I know, I know, I really love this boat.... Ok, I'll shut up now...

Not on my depth sounder. At least not out here where the ocean depths just make it stupid....

Twas indeed a good morning run! But certainly I won't be averaging that kind of speed over weeks....

Look at your Radar display, it will show you Wave Heights too!

But...

Since your Radar does not rotate, you can only see wave height, after the fact.

Well now, I always thought that the radar antenna was going round and round inside that radome... (I knew what you meant :D)
But seriously, those new-fangled radars give a wave height? I can sure see waves on my old JRC 1000, but I have to look out the side to see how tall they are.

Mostly happy, healthy, fed and rested. We've had s couple days where we've both been exhausted. And a couple nights where sleep was just not happening. But for the most part, and currently, we are both in good stead with all the above. Helps to not be sailing through a gale, or with breaking waves from all directions...

According to Gabriel’s position report you are about 145nm from Port. A little over a day to go. Light breezes, sunny warm days, 3.3 meter swells.

Good morning John. Yes, we are thinking we should be in Horta tomorrow. These last miles will be under motor most likely as there is little to no wind. Haven't checked fuel levels in awhile so will do that soon. But it would be difficult to believe we don't have plenty reserve. Of course I'll check. This leg will be another solid check on my estimated fuel consumption. Looking forward to better statistics...
