I've too many hours doing varnish and working on wooden boats to go back, much to my sorrow.@capta, Boat porn is an acquired taste. That link is pretty good one. After I spend my time on sailing adventures between Alaska and the Puget Sound, I might consider a wooden trailer boat.
I am expecting that to be 10 years in the future.

I discovered the lap strake hull on The Montgomery 15. I felt it served 2 functions in my experience. It caused splash to bounce away from the hull, providing a drier cockpit in a small boat. I felt it helped to keep the boat on track when healed.lapstrake hulls
